Professional athletes in the U.S. make a median salary of $36,963. For the cream of the crop, however, that yearly number can increase exponentially. Top athletes not only get paid for playing their sport — but they also earn sponsorships or brand deals as a result of their athletic fame.

Argentinian soccer player Lionel Messi has played for FC Barcelona (he is leaving after 17 seasons) and the Argentina national team. Called the “God of football” by teammates, Messi has a knack for goal scoring, setting multiple records.

Like Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. This 36-year-old athlete is from Portugal and currently plays for Manchester United F.C. His annual earnings come in at $120 million.

28-year-old Dak Prescott plays quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. He played in college for the Mississippi State Bulldogs and was drafted by the Cowboys in 2016.

Unlike athletes from more popular sports, Lewis Hamilton might not be well-known in circles outside auto racing — but this 36-year-old British driver is a top-notch athlete who earns big as a result. Hamilton has won seven World Drivers’ Championship titles.
9. Tom Brady (Football)
Total Annual Earnings: $76 million
Quarterback Tom Brady currently plays for the NFL team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady started his career with the New England Patriots in 2001. He holds seven total Super Bowl wins and makes an annual salary of about $76 million.

Football player Trent Williams is an offensive tackle. Williams played college ball at Oklahoma and was then drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 2010 NFL Draft. Currently, Williams plays for the 49ers. He is said to be one of the best tackles in the NFL.
