How to choose the best career test options

The best approach to selecting tests is to research available tests – starting with the ones below – and their focus. Then, choose a variety that assesses different things: work values, personality traits, strengths, skill sets and more, then evaluate the results. Think of the results of each test as a piece in your career puzzle that, as each piece comes together with the other parts, gives you a big-picture view of career possibilities for consideration.

Tip: Many career assessment and aptitude tests have not been scientifically proven, validated, or studied to demonstrate reliability. Most sites provide the research or support behind the test for your review, so you can make an informed decision.

Interest Assessment

The Interest Assessment quiz involves answering 30 questions about what you like and don’t like to do. Results provide you with an idea of the careers that might be a good fit for you. It takes about five minutes to complete.

Work Values Matcher

Ranking statements that define your ideal job, this values matcher helps you identify what’s most important to you about where you work. The results guide you toward selecting a career that matches your values and identifies companies that share your values.

123 Career Aptitude Test

The 123 Career Aptitude Test provides insights into the types of jobs that align with your personality. Based on the Holland Code personality types, this 15-question test takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

Note: Several career aptitude tests are based on the Holland Code personality types developed by psychologist Dr. John Holland. The six personality types include Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional – and are thought to overlap.

Interest Finder

Interest Finder highlights the type of person you are. Results provide an idea of your personality type to help you determine the types of jobs that best fit that personality. There is a short and long version option, which takes 5 to10 and 10 to 20 minutes to complete, respectively.

ONet Interest Profiler

The ONet Interest Profiler is a 60-question interest inventory. A profile is produced that highlights interests in six areas: Artistic, Social, Investigative, Conventional, and Enterprising. Career Cluster Match

The Career Cluster Match assessment utilizes the National Career Clusters Framework. The framework identifies 16 career clusters and related career pathways to support career exploration and awareness. Career Clusters provide a broad picture of occupational groups that require similar skills, whereas Pathways within career clusters allow you to focus on a career plan connected to education programs, jobs, and industries.

Keirsey Temperament Sorter
