Starting your morning off on the right foot sets the pace for your day. That doesn’t mean if you sleep through your alarm that your day is doomed, but when you put yourself first and set a simple routine, life just seems ‘better.’
Whether it’s true or it’s just a figment of your imagination, we’ll take it, right? Who doesn’t want to start their day looking and feeling their best?
If you’re ready to hack your morning routine, check out these great hacks.
Get up an hour earlier
We all love our sleep, but there’s something juicy about waking up an hour earlier than normal. That’s an entire 60 minutes for you, no one else. Make it an hour before anyone else in the house wakes up, and set your intentions for the day.
Whether you use that time to exercise, meditate, or binge-watch your favorite show, we won’t judge. The key is that you spend time doing what you want – and what sets you up for success for the day.
Move your body
You don’t need to be Jane Fond at 5 AM, but finding some way to move your body is important. Not only does it get your blood circulating and gets your brain moving, but it helps you get ready for the day.
Believe it or not, exercise energizes you more than that cup of Joe, and the effects last longer. You won’t have the 3 PM crash when you exercise in the morning versus downing a pot of coffee.
Make a list
How much do you love crossing things off a list? There’s something empowering about that line, right?
Why not do this for yourself every day? Not only will you feel supercharged every time you cross something off, but you’ll start the day off feeling organized. I don’t know about you, but I hate starting the day running around like crazy and yet feeling like I’ve accomplished nothing.
Sit down for 10 minutes and schedule your day. It doesn’t have to be set in stone – if you miss something or add something to it, that’s okay too. But knowing you’re a little more organized makes the morning go a lot smoother.
Journal your thoughts
Journaling is for everyone. Whether you are happy, sad, mad, or crazy excited, there’s power in putting those words on paper.
If you aren’t into journaling or feel like you have never-ending writer’s block, try this. Write down five things you are grateful for every day. It doesn’t matter if it’s that the sun is shining or you have a hot cup of coffee in front of you. Get in the habit of being grateful for even the little things.
Watch how journaling, whether long thoughts or quick lists of what you’re grateful for, changes how you act throughout your day. It’s a wonderful feeling.
Most importantly, be present with yourself in the morning. Chances are the rest of the day will take its toll on you, as will all the people in your life. People will ask things of you, expect things of you, and take the energy you didn’t even know you had.
Even if it’s just for a few minutes in the morning, be present. Just sit and breathe. Put your hands on your heart or your lap, wherever you are most comfortable, and enjoy the silence. Take long, deep breaths and listen to them and feel your body transform.
Use these five morning hacks, and before you know it, you’ll be a morning person too. Okay, maybe it won’t be that easy, but chances are it will change your life in ways you never expected. You won’t know until you try.
