American’s are not shy about their coffee addictions. Popular coffee chains like Starbucks, Dutch Bros, and Dunkin Donuts regularly have long lines at their drive-up windows. It seems most of us just need our caffeine, especially in the morning.
Our need for coffee is widespread, according to a survey conducted by the National Coffee Association. The study found that more than six in ten Americans (64%) drink coffee every day. With this heavy coffee intake, diet soda consumption continues to decline, according to this Gallup poll.
Few people disagree that coffee is a much healthier alternative than diet soda, but to what extent is still out for debate. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, recent studies have shown moderate coffee consumption may actually be good for your health.
Some of the benefits of drinking coffee may protect us against:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Strokes and heart attacks
- Parkinson’s disease
- Liver disease
The key here is moderation, which is what many of us, including the wealthy, continue to struggle with.
Here is a look into the bizarre coffee routines of 4 of the world’s richest people:
Caffeine is a legal drug that many of us crave. This is how the richest people prefer their coffee.
Elon Musk
Elon Musk has experimented with his diet in the past and also was addicted to caffeine. Before Musk was able to control his caffeine consumption, he drank several cups of coffee and up to eight cans of Diet Coke every day.
In an interview with Inc Magazine, he was asked about the amount of coffee and caffeine he consumed. He stated, “I got so freaking jacked that I seriously started to feel like I was losing my peripheral vision.”
Now, Musk has cut his habit down to two cups of coffee a day and keeps his office stocked with caffeine-free soda.
David Lynch
American director David Lynch is no stranger to a delicious cup of coffee. In fact, it’s one of the staples of his brainstorming sessions.
In an interview with Entrepreneur, he stated, “I [used to eat] at Bob’s Big Boy. I would go at 2:30, after the lunch rush. I ate a chocolate shake and four, five, six, seven cups of coffee with lots of sugar. […] I would get a rush from all this sugar, and I would get so many ideas!”
Who would have guessed that excessive sugar and caffeine intake was behind Lynch’s brilliant ideas?
Jeff Bezos
After getting his regular eight hours of sleep and waking up each morning without an alarm, Jeff Bezos needs his coffee and breakfast. While not exactly what you would expect, Bezos does not hit the ground running after he wakes up. His morning routine consists of reading the newspaper, drinking his coffee, and having breakfast with his kids before school.
Bezos describes this time as “my puttering time” before he gets started for the day. Bezos intentionally doesn’t schedule any meetings before 10:00 a.m. so he can relax. He told Inc. he makes time in his schedule to do nothing.
Ed Catmull
The co-founder of Pixar and current president of Walt Disney Animation Studios has a strict morning routine that involves a significant amount of caffeine.
In his own words, he stated, “I wake up, go downstairs, and start making a cup of coffee. I use three shots of espresso, mix in three tablespoons of cocoa powder, and two sweeteners. I’ve heard this helps you think better. I have no idea if this is true, but it tastes good.”
With three shots of espresso running through his veins, it’s no wonder he can keep up with his demanding schedule.
