Yacht clubs are social clubs centered around the sport of boating, typically located near a large body of water such as a lake or ocean. Members can cruise or race their boats together, enjoy club amenities, and socialize with other members.

These clubs also give members the opportunity to entertain guests, create business connections, support their communities, and forge new friendships with like-minded individuals. A yacht club membership can help advance your career while you enjoy the benefits and perks of a luxurious place to enjoy racing, watersports, and boating with others.

With substantial membership fees — not to mention the cost of purchase, upkeep, and maintenance on a boat itself — joining a yacht club is as much a financial decision as it is a lifestyle choice. Thanks to the benefits and access that a yacht club can offer, many members view their membership as an investment.

Do you have to own a yacht to join a yacht club?

While the inclusion of the word “yacht” in the name might lead one to believe that a member should own a yacht, this isn’t always the case. Some clubs do require members to own some sort of boat, but that vessel may not have to be defined as a yacht for membership purposes.

However, to enjoy all of the perks of yacht club membership, most members will own some sort of watercraft. At a minimum, members are typically expected to have some sailing or boating experience, especially at clubs where yachts can be rented for use by members.

Some yacht clubs also have areas where non-members are allowed during specific times such as a restaurant, or allow non-members pay to access certain amenities like a boat launch or swimming area.

Why join a yacht club?

The goal of each yacht club can vary based on the location and member population. Some clubs are tied to local ports or marinas and offer members the opportunity to get more involved in their community through various outreach events and fundraisers.

One of the main benefits of joining a yacht club is that club members can race their watercraft under the U.S. sanctioned burgee, or flag, of the yacht club. This is a requirement for many boat races at the national and international levels.

Some clubs also focus on yachting expeditions and group adventures, helping their members to plan trips and arrange travel details. These clubs may offer expert advice and plan to tailor-make expeditions for their members.

Similar to how a country club is structured, a yacht club is typically run by a board of directors or chairpersons with committees who plan activities and events as well as manage the general flow of business for the club. However, within a yacht club, the directors or other people in positions of authority may be referred to with nautical titles like port captain, harbormaster, fleet captain, or commodore.

Access to yacht club perks and amenities

While the amenities of each yacht club will vary, in general, members will be able to access the club’s meeting areas, any exercise or leisure facilities, dining areas, restaurant or bar, and boat slips or dry storage.

Many clubs have exclusive, members-only areas and perks, but it is up to the individual club to decide whether or not they allow the general public access to certain amenities. Often, a yacht club may have specific hours where their restaurant or bar is open to the public.

They may also offer boat launch access to the public during certain times for a fee, or rent slips and storage space for non-members at premium prices. Other clubs may offer their boat slips to members exclusively.

Junior or youth yacht programs are often offered at clubs for the children of members. Others offer sailing education courses for all ages. These programs may be offered for free or at a reduced cost to members but can have a premium price tag for non-members depending on the club.

Yacht club costs, fees, and rules

Yacht club membership fees are generally paid out monthly or annually, depending on the club, and can range from a few hundred to several thousands of dollars in dues. The more amenities and perks that a yacht club offers and the more exclusive its membership is, the more expensive the costs and fees associated with membership are.

In the U.S. alone, there are hundreds of yacht clubs from coast to coast, and many more worldwide. Clubs in the U.S. are ranked according to their level of service and amenities, overall quality, member commitment, and management, with the top clubs in the nation recognized by Platinum Clubs of America as a designation of excellence. As Forbes noted, only the most luxurious and exclusive yacht clubs are honored with this platinum status.

In more exclusive clubs, membership is by invitation only. Some clubs require new members to be sponsored by current members and go through a rigorous vetting process before gaining membership status.

Yacht clubs also vary in their rules for members and guests. They may have a specific dress code, boating and racing rules, parking guidelines to follow, as well as limits about bringing guests into the facilities.

Should you join a yacht club?

Yacht club membership requirements, pricing, available amenities, and facilities vary from club to club. It’s important to ask yourself what your goal is in joining a club before you dive in.

To find out if a club is a perfect fit, you can ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I interested in racing my yacht with others?
  • Do I need to have a sponsor or invitation to join?
  • Do I desire a club with an area to enjoy water activities other than boating?
  • How much public access do I want the club I join to have?
  • Do I want to pay a monthly membership fee or annual dues?
  • What amenities do I want to be able to access with my membership?
  • Is the club focused on community outreach?
  • Should I join a club with youth programs and sailing education courses?

A yacht club membership is an investment that can yield many benefits for members and their families. No matter which club you choose, finding a club that aligns with your personal needs and values will help you get the most out of the experience.
