The job market is in a state of flux, and employees are trying to make their way in the contemporary remote world. Whether you’ve been let go of from your job, or quit on your own, the data showing how few jobs are available in a $100K range can be disheartening — or so you might think.
Forbes, in an interview with Ladders CEO Marc Cenedella, reports that Ladders’ data collection from the top 50,000 U.S. employers each week “found a 33% year-over-year increase in openings” for $100K+ jobs. This is an astounding 108% higher than last September when Forbes reports there were only 92,000 six-figure jobs available.
While it is true that many Americans have been struggling in the pandemic, things are not as bleak as they might seem. While low-wage occupations have decreased by 12.5% between December of 2019 and 2020, higher-wage jobs barely suffered a loss of 0.4%.
Good news for you! If you’re looking for a new role, these are eight companies hiring for remote-only work right now — that all pay over 100K.
1. UnitedHealth Group
Chances are, you’ve heard of United, a for-profit healthcare management company based in Minnesota, as/career-advice/the-1-outdoor-activity-proven-to-make-you-happier-than-money the second-largest healthcare company. They reported over $250 in revenue in 2020, and despite the pandemic, they continue to expand a hire for positions all across the country across varying fields.
This information management firm might not be the biggest household name, but protecting the information of many of the Fortune 1000 companies is their game. They advertise as a company focused on “storing, protecting and managing information and assets,” but the positions they’re hiring for is in more than just tech.
The computer mega-giant Dell is also hiring these days – and though you might have a Mac computer or an iPhone, Dell has been the unsung hero of 2020, posting record earnings. Reviewers rave about working for Dell, who’s hiring for positions ranging from marketing to consultants.
Medtronic is a medical device company operating jointly from the United States and Ireland. Founded in 1949, they’ve been expanding its biomedical engineering services across 150 countries, with 39 lab sites worldwide – withplenty of room for some remote hiring.
TradeStation is an enormous online securities and futures broker who offers trading and advice in cryptocurrencies – but unlike their competitors Charles Schwab or RobinHood, TradeStation is scaling out with a rush to hire new talent.
Another memorable name for most, Ernst & Young has been known to hire consultants but has a plethora of other opportunities. With four divisions including Assurance, Consulting, Strategy and Transactions, and Tax, EY makes more than $32 billion in revenue each year.
Founded in 2004, Yelp has become a household name when one is attempting to investigate local businesses. Though the pandemic has certainly had an effect on in-person shopping, Yelp is looking to a brighter future and hiring for remote positions in marketing and product management.
8. Red Hat
Red Hat is the biggest software company you’ve never heard of; their subsidiaries, StackBox Inc., 3Scale or JBoss might be slightly more familiar, but their software Red Hat Linux should ring the biggest bell. After being acquired by IBM in 2019, Red Hat is ready to craft a new image for itself with a remote hiring frenzy.
So how do I get hired?
There are a few tricks for getting hired for remote-only work that might not apply to an in-person job. For one thing, an applicant must have a clear and concise answer ready for why they want to be working remotely prepared for their interview, outside of our current pandemic circumstances.
Companies want to know if you’re an invested remote-worker, or if you’re just riding a trendy wave to avoid the office, and when talking to a hiring manager, it’s important to give a thought-out response if you’re asked why working remotely is so important to you.
The other necessary portion of one’s remote application process is the research the company’s remote culture, and see if it would be a good fit for you. While the in-person culture at a company might include potlucks and beer on tap, remotely, there might be more of a focus on gaming events, walking meetings, or other activities.
Generally, remote company culture relies more on your own motivation to connect, rather than having a social event conveniently dropped in your lap. There could even be a lack of mandatory connection at some companies, which to some might be a bonus. Whatever the culture, it’s vital to go in with eyes wide open, knowing full well that though you could be working for one company, culturally, you’ll be in a completely different place.
