What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Work Control Planner 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Work Control is a multidisciplinary group, providing deployed support to all Facility Operations Directorates (FODs) for maintenance planning, scheduling, and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) support. The MSS-Work Control group uses Integrated Work Management to plan, schedule, and perform work in a safe and secure manner.

You will be responsible to the a deployed Work Control Team Lead for developing and/or reviewing work packages including time, material, and labor estimates, written step-by-step work instructions, procedures, and/or safety and post maintenance testing requirements for the implementation and control of operations, maintenance, construction or modification of work activities within a given facility or area. Specific planning duties may be related to mechanical, electrical, chemical and/or radiological equipment, policies, and procedures and may also include resolving work restraints and bringing work packages to final closure.

Work Control Planner 1 ($60,500 - $93,600)

As a Work Control Planner 1, you will prepare and develop detailed step-by-step work instructions for equipment and/or system corrective maintenance work type; and/or preventative maintenance work packages for activities within nuclear and non-nuclear facilities in accordance with applicable procedures and regulations. As such, you will identify required labor, material, and equipment needed; environmental issues; work hazards; and control measures such as the isolation, containment or de-energizing of various mechanical, physical, electrical, chemical and/or radiological systems according to established procedures and regulations to be successful in completing the work activity.

Work Control Planner 2 ($72,800 - $115,400)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Work Control Planner 2 will develop and/or review work packages including time, material, and labor estimates, written step-by-step work instructions, procedures, and/or safety and testing requirements for the implementation and control of operations, maintenance, or modification of work activities within a given facility or area. Specific planning duties may be related to mechanical, electrical, chemical and/or radiological equipment, policies, and procedures and may include resolving work restraints and bringing work packages to final closure.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Work Control & Planning Experience: Experience with work control, maintenance, and/or materials management. Working knowledge of work control policies, practices, and procedures. Experience identifying labor, materials, and equipment for work activities.

Safety, Environmental & Regulatory Knowledge: Knowledge of work hazards and safety practices. Understanding of operating configurations and lockout/tagout procedures. Experience identifying environmental issues and applying hazard controls.
Technical & Documentation Skills: Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics. Experience supporting work package development and review.

Computer & Systems Proficiency: Proficiency using computerized work management systems. Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, spreadsheets, and reports.
Additional Job Requirements for Work Control Planner 2 level:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Planning & Prioritization: Working knowledge of and experience with work control, materials management, and/or mechanical maintenance. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting work control and planning.
Knowledge & Expertise: Ability to fully understand work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures. Experience interpreting various mechanical and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics Ability to fully conceptualize and communicate major elements of work control and planning to both technical and non-technical personnel. Knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting work control and planning.

Technology: Ability to fully utilize and manipulate a computerized work management system in maintaining and tracking work-planning activities. Experience in the preparation and presentation of work control reports.

Education/Experience at Work Control Planner 1 level: Position requires 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Work Control Planner 2 level: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE 426.2A Minimum Requirements: Position requires a high school diploma.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's infrastructure and site planning policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Familiar with and or having the understanding of facility support equipment, such as HVAC systems, Compressors, Boilers, and Electrical Distribution systems.
  • Knowledgeable in tracking work activities from conception through completion, preferably in construction management and or facility management industries.
  • Active "Q" clearance
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Climbing fixed ladders.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
