Reporting to the Vice President & General Manager, the
VP of Software Engineering will lead AQI's software engineering organization and define the architectural and platform strategy that enables Product's roadmap. This leader will balance strategic vision with deep technical engagement-knowing when to operate at the executive level and when to get close to the work to unblock teams, challenge assumptions, and accelerate delivery. The VP of Software Engineering will lead engineering, architecture, DevOps, and platform teams to modernize legacy products, scale cloud and on-prem solutions, leverage AI to accelerate development, and deliver high-quality software that helps customers use water data and analytics to improve global water management.
The candidate should based in
Vancouver, BC. This role requires approximately
20% travel including travel to Canada and the U.S.
What you will do: • Define and execute AQI's architecture and platform strategy in close partnership with Product Management, translating product direction into the technical "how" that enables faster, scalable delivery.
• Lead a distributed engineering organization of approximately 60-80 associates, including a senior L2 leadership team across Canada, the U.S. and India.
• Modernize legacy code, platforms, and products while supporting cloud, hybrid cloud, and on-prem solutions across Azure and AWS environments.
• Accelerate software delivery and product releases while maintaining quality, security, reliability, and customer impact.
• Establish engineering excellence through modern Agile, DevOps, architectural governance, prioritization, trade-off decision-making, and execution rigor.
• Leverage AI for coding and development acceleration, with the opportunity to support AI-enabled product capabilities that customers can use.
• Coach, mentor, and inspire engineering leaders while fostering collaboration, accountability, followership, and a team-first culture that fits AQI's mission-driven environment.
What you bring • 15+ years of software engineering experience, ideally with at least 7 years in engineering leadership roles.
• Proven ability to lead software organizations through scale, modernization, platform evolution, and improved speed of delivery.
• Experience leading leaders in multi-layer engineering organizations, including coaching autonomous senior managers without becoming a gatekeeper or micromanager.
• Strong technical depth across software architecture, cloud-native and on-prem platforms, Azure and AWS, APIs, DevOps practices, and scalable enterprise software systems.
• Track record of measurable impact, such as accelerating development, improving product release velocity, modernizing platforms, increasing quality, reducing complexity, or enabling customer and business outcomes.
• Mission-driven mindset and genuine interest in AQI's purpose: using water data, analytics, and technology to support water conservation, chemical savings, energy savings, environmental impact, and smarter water management.
