Manager, US Tax

About the Position

As a member of the US Tax Management Team, you will work closely with the Partner and team on US compliance, provision work, tax planning initiatives and requirements. Your organizational skills will enable you to directly work with junior staff, which will include you reviewing their work for accuracy and completeness. Additionally, you will participate and help support with research on tax-planning strategies for our clients and will have an opportunity to support the preparation of tax returns. The successful candidate will possess strong technical expertise in U.S. individual taxation, excellent client service skills, and the ability to mentor and develop team members.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Oversee portfolios of U.S. individual and cross-border tax clients, ensuring high-quality service and timely delivery of engagements.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of tax concepts and application of tax knowledge as it relates State income tax compliance and U.S income tax provision and preparation
  • Review complex U.S. trust returns, estate returns and U.S. individual income tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1040NR, and related schedules.
  • Review and provide guidance on U.S. international information reporting requirements
  • Maintain current knowledge of U.S. tax legislation, regulatory developments, and Canada-U.S. tax treaty matters.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and provide proactive advice to individuals and families with cross-border tax considerations.
  • Research and analyze complex Canada-U.S. cross-border tax issues and provide practical recommendations to clients.
  • Supervise a team of staff to ensure compliance with prescribed qualitative and quantitative standards
  • Develop the capabilities of less experienced staff through coaching, knowledge transfer, and internal training
  • Oversee and coordinate files with offshore staff
  • Manage engagement budgets, staffing, and workflow to ensure efficient delivery of client services.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through exceptional service and trusted advisory support.

Requirements:

  • College or University degree
  • CPA designation is an asset
  • Minimum 4 years of public accounting experience with significant focus on U.S. individual and cross-border taxation
  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. expatriate taxation, foreign reporting requirements, and Canada-U.S. cross-border tax matters
  • US Federal and State compliance knowledge with particular emphasis on cross border issues impacting individuals and exposure to international compliance
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience managing client engagements and supervising staff in a public accounting environment
  • Experience using Go System or iFirm is an asset.
