Position Information

TxDOT's West Harris Area Office at Houston District is looking for a Transportation Engineer Specialist III or IV. This position will ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Work will require contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Position Description

Transportation Engineer Specialist III

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques; trains and reviews the work of others; others. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. May serve as lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic
    presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Prepares environmental documents.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Engineer Specialist IV

Provides highly skilled technical expertise and oversees multiple design and advanced building construction projects. Reports

to a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Work requires contact

with governmental agencies, consultants and construction firms. May serve as lead worker. Employees are virtually

self-supervising and assume accountability for their work.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for this job include those listed above and the following

  • Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to
    accommodate projects already underway.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Transportation Engineer Specialist III

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 8 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
