Full Job Description
About the Team

Authenticity Guarantee is a key initiative at eBay where select items are verified by professional authenticators to enhance buyer trust, confidence, and satisfaction.

The Authentication Technology team builds end-to-end software solutions powering the authentication lifecycle-including receiving, shipping, warehouse operations, storage, imaging, and Android applications-while integrating with custom hardware systems. This requires designing highly scalable, distributed, and reliable systems.

About the Role

We are seeking a Tech Lead Manager (TLM) who combines the technical depth of a Staff Engineer with the people leadership of an Engineering Manager.

You will own architecture and technical direction for a critical product area while also managing and growing a team of engineers. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of hands-on system design, cross-team influence, and team leadership.

You will remain close to the technology-guiding design decisions, reviewing code, and solving complex problems-while also ensuring your team is effective, motivated, and delivering high-impact results.

If you enjoy building 0 to 1, this would be a great fit!

Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
  • Own and drive end-to-end system architecture across frontend, backend, and platform layers of a 0 to 1 product
  • Design scalable, distributed, and resilient systems supporting high-volume workflows
  • Define and standardize architecture patterns, APIs, and data models
  • Lead design reviews and influence technical decisions across the product and sometimes across multiple products & teams
  • Partner with Architects and leadership to shape long-term technical strategy
  • Identify and address system-wide scalability, security, performance, and reliability challenges

Hands-On Engineering
  • Stay actively involved in critical parts of the codebase and system design
  • Contribute to design, debugging, and implementation of complex features
  • Lead by example in writing high-quality, maintainable, production-grade code
  • Prototype new technologies and validate architectural approaches

People Management & Team Leadership
  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of engineers (career development, performance, coaching)
  • Build a high-performing, inclusive engineering culture
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts
  • Provide continuous feedback and support career progression

Execution & Delivery
  • Own delivery of complex, cross-functional initiatives from concept to production
  • Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical architecture, design and execution plans
  • Balance technical investments vs. product delivery
  • Ensure predictable execution and high-quality outcomes

Engineering Excellence & Operations
  • Establish and enforce best practices for testing, CI/CD, observability, and reliability
  • Define and track SLAs and key system metrics
  • Drive improvements in performance, scalability, and developer productivity
  • Ensure systems meet security and compliance standards

Cross-Functional Influence
  • Partner with product, design, infrastructure, and operations teams
  • Align technical direction across multiple teams and domains
  • Influence roadmap through strong technical and business judgment

Minimum Qualifications (Must Have)
  • 10+ years of experience in full stack software engineering
  • 1+ years of engineering management experience (or equivalent team leadership experience)
  • Proven track record of owning architecture and delivering large-scale distributed systems
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React
    • Backend: Java, Node.js, Ruby, or similar
  • Deep understanding of system design, microservices, APIs (REST/GraphQL), and event-driven systems
  • Experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and services (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, Storage, CDN, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of data modeling (SQL & NoSQL)
  • Experience driving technical decisions across teams
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD, testing strategies, and DevOps practices
  • Proven ability to lead teams while remaining technically hands-on
  • AI usage in software development

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mobile development (Android)
  • Familiarity with observability platforms and distributed tracing
  • Experience with micro-frontend or modular architectures
  • Google Cloud certification (Developer or Architect)
  • Experience building or integrating AI/ML systems or LLMs
  • Contributions to open-source projects
