The School of Medicine Dean’s Office has an outstanding opportunity for a Systems Engineer, Infrastructure and Operations, to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure and Operations (Manager), the Systems Engineer, Infrastructure and Operations (Systems Engineer) is responsible for the implementation, support, and lifecycle management of infrastructure systems across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments for the School of Medicine. This role serves as a primary execution-focused engineering resource within the Infrastructure and Operations team, translating architectural direction into implemented, production-ready solutions.
The Systems Engineer is a hands-on technical contributor responsible for infrastructure engineering, automation, platform enablement, and project delivery across compute, storage, networking, virtualization, and cloud platforms.
This position works closely with central IT teams, application and data teams, faculty and research staff, and other technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand requirements, recommend solutions, and ensure infrastructure and platform services align with organizational needs while minimizing risk.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Engineering & Lifecycle Ownership (30%)
- Implement, maintain, and improve core infrastructure systems spanning virtualization, storage, network infrastructure, and Windows Server environments
- Support and administer Linux systems in hybrid and cloud contexts; execute lifecycle initiatives including OS upgrades and hardware refresh
- Monitor system health and capacity; troubleshoot complex issues across compute, storage, and network layers
Cloud Engineering & Hybrid Platform Support (15%)
- Implement and support hybrid Azure infrastructure including virtual networking, compute, and platform services, aligned with centrally managed connectivity and hub networking
- Configure identity, access, and connectivity solutions for Azure workloads, including managed identities, RBAC, private endpoints, and NSG configurations; support integration with on-premises systems
- Support Azure governance practices including Policy enforcement, resource tagging, and cost awareness; assist with evaluation of new Azure services and solutions
Platform & Application Enablement (15%)
- Configure and support application hosting infrastructure including web services, DNS, SSL certificates, identity integrations, and scheduled services
- Collaborate with development and data teams to recommend workload placement and ensure proper networking, identity, and system integration. Assist application teams with infrastructure-related requirements
Security, Compliance & Resilience (10%)
- Implement system hardening, patching, and vulnerability remediation in alignment with UW and UW Medicine security policies and support disaster recovery and business continuity efforts
Project Execution & Cross-System Troubleshooting (10%)
- Execute infrastructure and platform projects with appropriate guidance from the manager, breaking work into actionable steps and delivering against agreed timelines. Perform cross-system troubleshooting
Automation & Engineering Efficiency (5%)
- Develop and maintain automation scripts (PowerShell and Python) to reduce manual processes across certificate lifecycle management, backup tasks, and system provisioning
Observability, Governance & Operations (5%)
- Support, maintain, and improve monitoring, alerting, and logging platforms (e.g., SCOM, Splunk, Azure Monitor, or equivalent tools); analyze performance trends to proactively identify issues
Continuing Education & Professional Growth (5%)
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and develop skills in areas aligned with team direction (e.g., Azure, Linux, automation, AI, security)
Additional Responsibilities & Operational Support (5%)
Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- At least three years of hands-on experience in systems administration or infrastructure engineering, with experience appropriate to a mid-level engineering role

Additional Qualifications
- Foundational working knowledge of virtualization platforms (VMware or equivalent), including core operational concepts such as snapshot lifecycle management, VM configuration, and virtual resource allocation
- Solid experience with Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, and Group Policy and networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and firewall concepts
- Working knowledge of SAN or iSCSI storage systems, including fundamental concepts such as storage provisioning, volume management, and connectivity
- Comfort working with Linux systems in a command-line environment
- Experience writing and maintaining scripts in a production or professional environment (PowerShell preferred), and troubleshooting across multiple infrastructure layers
- Experience with monitoring, alerting, or logging platforms in a production or professional environment (e.g., SCOM, Splunk, Azure Monitor, syslog, Nagios, or equivalent)
- Experience configuring and supporting system backup and recovery operations using any backup platform or solution (e.g., Veeam, Azure Backup, Windows Server Backup, Backup Exec, or equivalent)
- Strong documentation skills and ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, demonstrating accountability, follow-through, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting web application hosting platforms (e.g., IIS), including configuration, deployment support, and troubleshooting
- Experience with Microsoft Azure in a hybrid environment, SSO technologies (e.g., Shibboleth), Python or additional scripting languages, and supporting research or data-driven environments
- Familiarity with Azure governance (Policy, RBAC, cost management), and exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code practices

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$86,376.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$108,900.00 annual
