Scope of RoleCorning's Optical Communications division is seeking a Systems Design Engineer to work directly with Sales, Marketing, and Customer Care teams to design passive optical network solutions for external customers. In this role, you will develop technically sound network designs and bills of material (BOMs) for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), Multi-Dwelling-Unit (MDU), Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB), and other access network deployments.
Location, Work Hours and Travel requirementsWork Hours - Normal Business hours - 8am to 5pm
Location : Charlotte, NC
Up to 25%, including some international travel; weekend travel may be required. Travel is related to Sales support, customer training, and project work.
Key Responsibilities- Develop optimized passive optical network solutions using Corning's product portfolio, including newly released and custom-specification products
- Collaborate with Sales and commercial teams on customer visits to present solutions, deliver training, and resolve technical challenges
- Manage multiple design iterations to satisfy customer technical requirements while meeting corporate financial and strategic objectives
- Maintain proactive communication with internal commercial personnel throughout the design process to manage commercial impact
- Contribute to shared Design Engineering team responsibilities and take ownership of individually assigned roles to maximize group efficiency
- Support special projects that may involve additional travel or embedded work with external customers based on demand, priority, and experience
Experiences/Education - Required- Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline; Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- 100% proficiency in English, written and verbal
- Experience consolidating technical and commercial information from multiple sources into clear, focused technical deliverables
Experiences/Education - Desired- 2+ years of experience in the telecommunications industry
- Experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) or Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Knowledge of passive optical network products (FTTx, LAN, Data Center) and network design applications
- Knowledge of basic optical fiber theory
- Field experience with fiber optic products and processes (cable handling, fiber splicing, connectorization, and testing)
- Product development or manufacturing experience
- Experience in a commercial organization (Sales, Marketing, or similar)
- Experience presenting technical solutions and network designs to audiences ranging from field technicians to senior leadership
- Manages multiple concurrent design projects under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
This position does not support immigration sponsorship. The range for this position is $84,658.00 - $116,406.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
