POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:              Sustainability Manager

REPORTS TO:            Senior Director, Global Compliance, EHS and Sustainability
POSITION STATUS:             Full-Time 
WORK LOCATION:     (HTA) DLS (Dallas, TX) or CGO (Schaumburg, IL) or NCP (Hillsboro, OR)
WORK STYLE DESIGNATION:     Hybrid (+50% Remote)           
WORK STYLE REQUIREMENT:    2 Days Onsite/3 Days Remote

EXPECTED PAY RANGE: $110,089 to $151,372 Annually

POSITION SUMMARY

The Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing sustainability strategies and programs. This position drives environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, sustainability reporting, material compliance, and continuous improvement efforts across the organization. Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, this position integrates sustainability and material compliance into operations and business processes ensuring alignment with global environmental regulations, corporate CSR goals, and customer requirements.
 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Sustainability and Material Compliance Program Management (40%)

•    Lead the development and execution of company’s sustainability strategies and goals aligned with Hitachi Group priorities.

•    Manage sustainability initiatives, including environmental performance tracking, ESG reporting, product stewardship, responsible materials management, and product environmental compliance programs.

•    Establish long-term sustainability objectives and annual metrics, targets, and action plans to measure performance and drive continuous improvement.

•    Lead the company's material compliance program, including compliance with applicable regulations such as REACH, RoHS, TSCA, SCIP, Proposition 65, PFAS, and other emerging product environmental requirements.

Regulatory Monitoring and Sustainability Governance (20%)

•    Monitor emerging sustainability and material compliance regulations, reporting standards, and stakeholder expectations.

•    Assess business impacts and communicate regulatory requirements, risks, and recommended actions to relevant parties.

•    Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and internal controls that support sustainability and material compliance programs.

Reporting and Performance Management (10%)

•    Lead collection, validation, analysis of sustainability and material compliance data

•    Coordinate and prepare disclosures, customer sustainability and material compliance questionnaires and corporate reporting requirements

•    Support development of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, carbon reduction plans and sustainability performance metrics

Cross-Functional Collaboration (20%)

•    Engage internal and external stakeholders—including customers, suppliers, business leaders, and global Hitachi teams—to advance sustainability objectives, support compliance requirements, and promote program implementation.

•    Serve as subject matter expert and provide guidance on sustainability and material compliance requirements for internal teams including EHS, Legal, Trade Compliance, Procurement, Product Support, Sales and Engineering.

•    Collaborate with global Hitachi sustainability teams to align standards, reporting requirements, and best practices.

•    Partner with suppliers and procurement teams to obtain material compliance data, support regulatory compliance activities, and drive continuous improvement.

Training and Communication (10%)

•    Develop and deliver training materials on sustainability and material compliance.

•    Promote awareness and understanding of sustainability priorities across the organization.

•    Build organizational capability and engagement by communicating sustainability and material compliance requirements in a clear, actionable manner.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

•    Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability, or related field (or equivalent subject matter experience)
•    Relevant environmental or sustainability certifications preferred.

    

EXPERIENCE AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

•    5 – 7 years of progressive experience in material compliance, regulatory compliance, corporate social responsibility, ESG, or environmental programs 
•    Experience in building or managing compliance programs and leading sustainability initiatives in a global business environment
•    Experience with ESG reporting frameworks and sustainability metrics
•    Experience managing cross-functional projects and influencing stakeholders without direct authority
•    Strong knowledge of global regulations (GHG Accounting, REACH, RoHS, TSCA, SCIP, Prop 65, etc.) preferred

•    Ability to translate complex sustainability topics to technical and non-technical audiences 
•    Ability to independently manage multiple projects, competing priorities, and changing deadlines
•    Self-motivated team player with a strong work ethic and the flexibility to support a global organization across time zones
•    Must be willing to travel (minimum 20%), including internationally, and have a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.
