Job Summary and ResponsibilitiesAs our Supervisor Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS), you will lead and mentor a high-performing CDS team, driving improvements in clinical documentation accuracy and completeness. You'll optimize our revenue cycle and ensure regulatory compliance by overseeing meticulous record reviews, directly impacting patient data quality, coding, and physician query processes. Every day you will conduct comprehensive inpatient medical record reviews, identify documentation discrepancies, and facilitate physician queries for precise diagnoses and complications. You will actively collaborate and educate clinicians on documentation best practices, HCC capture, and severity of illness. Your responsibilities include monitoring team performance, implementing process improvements, and ensuring adherence to coding guidelines to optimize our case mix index (CMI).
To be successful in this role, you will possess a strong clinical background, in-depth ICD-10-CM/PCS knowledge, and experience as a CDS, with prior supervisory experience preferred. You'll demonstrate exceptional communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to educate healthcare professionals. A relevant certification (e.g., CCDS, CDIP) is essential for excelling in this dynamic and impactful position.
- Provide day-to-day oversight of the CDI program and act as a resource for CDIS' within the assigned region.
- Monitor all staff performance. Report on monthly CDI leadership meetings.
- Monitor clarification rates and provider responses for CDIS team members; provide feedback and education as needed.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations and ongoing performance coaching.
- Formulate and execute action plans for CDI process improvement based on system results as needed.
- Support clinical and financial metrics related to documentation quality, case mix index (CMI), severity of illness (SOI), and risk of mortality (ROM).
Job RequirementsRequired
- Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma
- Registered Nurse State of Employment or valid license from compact state
- Two (2) years experience as a Clinical Documentation Improvement Professional
- Must demonstrate subject matter expertise, including ability to write clinically credible clarifications, identify CDI opportunity, interact with providers and meet standard CDI industry benchmarks

- BSN
- CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist)
- Three (3) years clinical experience with ICU, CCU or strong Med/Surg
