About the role

We are looking for a Superintendent to lead the execution of transformation initiatives, operational services, and continuous improvement activities that support business performance, operational efficiency, and strategic objectives. The role oversees day-to-day operational planning, workforce management, service delivery, safety, budget performance, and stakeholder engagement while driving sustainable improvements across the organization.

This position provides leadership through supervisors, team leaders, or professional employees and ensures that transformation programs and operational services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with Rio Tinto standards and business priorities.

Reporting to the Manager – Transformation and Services and working in a collaborative community within the team, you will be working Monday to Friday and:

  • Leading by example in safety and compliance, ensuring adherence to all Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations, standards, and Rio Tinto’s safety culture.
  • Leading and supporting the implementation of Transformation & Services initiatives, ensuring alignment with business priorities and operational objectives.
  • Identifying recurring process, service delivery, and operational performance issues, determining root causes, and implementing sustainable improvement solutions.
  • Monitoring operational and service performance, identifying constraints impacting productivity, customer experience, cost performance, and strategic outcomes.
  • Developing, managing, and monitoring departmental budgets, ensuring responsible cost control and efficient resource allocation.
  • Evaluating business cases and improvement opportunities, articulating the value, risks, and impacts of transformation and capital investment initiatives.
  • Leading, coaching, and developing a team of professionals while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Building strong relationships across functions, sites, and leadership teams to ensure effective service delivery and successful execution of business priorities.
  • Driving the adoption of Rio Tinto leading practices, change management programs, and continuous improvement methodologies to enhance operational effectiveness and long-term performance.

About you

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, with eligibility for Professional Engineer registration with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams within a relevant operational or industrial environment
  • A collaborative and empowering leadership style, with the ability to coach, mentor, and support team growth
  • A proactive and strategic mindset, with the ability to anticipate challenges and identify opportunities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across a range of stakeholders
  • Solid understanding of work management processes, with the ability to apply them in a practical, operational setting

The base salary range for this role is $131,360 - $197,040 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
