Position Description

Harper Brothers Construction - Superintendent

Position Summary

The Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day field operations of heavy civil construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, within scope, and in accordance with company quality standards. This role serves as the on-site leader, coordinating crews, subcontractors, and resources while maintaining strong communication with project management.

The Superintendent plays a key role in driving production, enforcing safety compliance, and delivering successful project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Oversight & Site Management

  • Lead daily field operations across utility and infrastructure construction projects, including sitework, excavation, trenching, and pipe installation
  • Ensure all work aligns with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements
  • Supervise field personnel, subcontractors, and vendors to maintain productivity and compliance


Safety Leadership & Compliance

  • Enforce strict adherence to safety policies, OSHA standards, and company procedures
  • Conduct daily safety meetings and toolbox talks to promote hazard awareness
  • Perform routine site inspections to identify and mitigate risks
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence


Quality Control & Standards

  • Ensure all work meets company quality expectations, client specifications, and industry standards
  • Inspect ongoing work for compliance with drawings, plans, and specifications
  • Address deficiencies promptly to maintain project quality


Scheduling & Coordination

  • Collaborate with Project Managers to develop and maintain project schedules
  • Coordinate delivery of materials, equipment, and resources to meet project timelines
  • Monitor workflow to ensure efficient execution and milestone achievement


Resource & Equipment Management

  • Oversee allocation of labor, equipment, and materials across the job site
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and available when needed
  • Adjust staffing levels to meet project demands and optimize productivity


Subcontractor & Vendor Coordination

  • Manage subcontractor and vendor performance to ensure work meets safety, quality, and schedule requirements
  • Coordinate activities and maintain strong working relationships
  • Monitor deliverables to ensure compliance with project specifications


Communication & Reporting

  • Serve as the liaison between field operations and project management teams
  • Provide regular updates on project progress, risks, and key milestones
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, timekeeping, and project documentation


Problem-Solving & Issue Resolution

  • Identify and resolve field issues including personnel, equipment, material shortages, or delays
  • Partner with Project Managers to implement timely and effective solutions


Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead by example, fostering a safety-first, high-performance
  • Mentor and develop field staff to support skill growth and career progression
  • Provide feedback and support performance management efforts


Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Superintendent or in a similar field leadership role
  • Experience managing large-scale civil or utility infrastructure projects (excavation, trenching, pipeline installation)
  • Background in heavy civil construction, foundations, or drilling operations preferred


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • In-depth knowledge of construction processes, methods, and safety standards
  • Effective communication skills across field teams and stakeholders
  • Proficiency in construction management software and Microsoft Office tools


Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred


Certifications

  • OSHA 30 certification required
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred
  • PMP or similar certification is a plus


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and active construction site environments
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs as needed
