Job Summary
DynaTen, a Comfort Systems USA Company, is seeking a Startup Technician IV to join our Startup team. This senior-level technical position is responsible for supporting complex startup, testing, troubleshooting, and system readiness activities on commercial construction projects.
The Startup Technician IV serves as a senior technical expert within the Startup group. This position does not carry formal management responsibility, but is expected to provide technical guidance, assist with training and mentoring technicians at all levels, support complex issue resolution, and represent the Startup department in project meetings when necessary.
Experience Requirement
10 or more years of direct startup, commissioning, service, construction, installation, or related field experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and support advanced startup activities for complex commercial HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
- Serve as a senior technical resource for startup, troubleshooting, system readiness, and equipment operation.
- Evaluate installation readiness before startup, including equipment access, controls readiness, electrical readiness, mechanical installation, and manufacturer requirements.
- Troubleshoot advanced mechanical, electrical, controls, airflow, sequencing, and performance issues.
- Assist with resolving complex field issues involving project teams, trade partners, controls vendors, commissioning authorities, engineers, and clients.
- Represent the Startup department in project meetings, technical discussions, and coordination meetings when necessary.
- Support warranty-related troubleshooting, field investigations, and issue resolution.
- Review drawings, submittals, wiring diagrams, sequence of operations, equipment data, and project requirements.
- Complete clear, accurate, and timely startup documentation.
- Recommend improvements to startup documentation, checklists, field processes, and training needs.
- Assist with training, coaching, and mentoring Startup Technician I, II, and III team members.
- Promote a high standard of safety, quality, professionalism, and customer service.
- Support continuous improvement of startup practices through field feedback and lessons learned.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced understanding of mechanical, electrical, controls, airflow, and air conditioning theory.
- Advanced troubleshooting ability for commercial HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
- Strong knowledge of equipment startup requirements, manufacturer procedures, system operation, and field coordination.
- Advanced understanding of motors, motor controls, contactors, starters, relays, disconnects, transformers, pumps, fans, economizers, VFDs, sensors, actuators, DDC hardware, embedded controls, and control sequences.
- Ability to apply advanced controls knowledge to DX, chilled water, evaporative cooling, and other commercial cooling systems.
- Ability to diagnose complex system interactions involving equipment, controls, airflow, hydronics, electrical systems, and installation conditions.
- Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to clients, project teams, contractors, vendors, engineers, commissioning authorities, and internal leadership.
- Ability to mentor and assist less experienced technicians.
- Ability to produce clear, complete, and professional startup documentation.
- Proficient with Excel, Word, Procore, CxAlloy, Microsoft Project, and similar tools.
Required Qualifications

- EPA certification required or must be obtained after hire.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 required or must be obtained after hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Senior-level commercial HVAC startup, service, commissioning, or controls experience.
- Experience with data center, healthcare, institutional, industrial, or large commercial projects.
- Advanced experience with DDC systems, embedded controls, sensors, actuators, VFDs, control sequences, and system integration.
- Experience supporting commissioning authorities, owner representatives, engineers, and project leadership.
- Manufacturer training, TAB experience, controls certifications, commissioning training, ASHRAE Guideline 0 familiarity, or similar technical credentials.
A level II Startup Technician should have advanced knowledge of the following, and other, typical equipment and systems:
