Summary
The Staff UX Engineer is responsible for defining and advancing the UX Engineering strategy across the Waters Software portfolio. This role leads the development of scalable frontend architecture, reusable component libraries, and enterprise design systems that enable consistent, intuitive user experiences across a diverse suite of medical instrument software products.
Partnering with Human Factors Engineering, Product Management, Architecture, and Agile development teams, the Staff UX Engineer transforms user insights into shared UX frameworks and implementation standards that improve usability, accelerate development, and support long-term product portfolio alignment.
Responsibilities:
- Define and drive the UX Engineering strategy across the Waters Software portfolio, delivering consistent, scalable, and user-centered experiences across products.
- Serve as the technical authority for frontend architecture, UX implementation, and Design System governance.
- Lead the vision, development, adoption, and continuous evolution of a shared enterprise Design System and Storybook component ecosystem.
- Establish standards for component architecture, interaction patterns, accessibility, design tokens, theming, branding, and visual consistency.
- Architect, develop, and maintain reusable UI frameworks and components using Angular, TypeScript, HTML5, CSS/SCSS, and Angular Material.
- Define and govern frontend engineering best practices, including coding standards, documentation, API consistency, component lifecycle management, and architecture review processes.
- Drive quality-focused development practices through automated testing, visual regression testing, accessibility validation, usability verification, and continuous quality monitoring.
- Establish scalable CI/CD, versioning, release management, and dependency governance practices for shared frontend assets and Design System components.
- Partner with Human Factors Engineering, Product Management, Architects, and Agile teams to translate user research and workflow insights into reusable UX solutions and development standards.
- Enable Scrum teams to accelerate software delivery through reusable design assets, implementation guidance, reference architectures, and shared engineering frameworks.
- Collaborate with Technical Leads and Architects to define frontend technology strategies, roadmaps, and long-term platform direction.
- Conduct architecture, design, and implementation reviews to ensure usability, performance, accessibility, maintainability, and consistency across the software portfolio.
- Monitor Design System adoption, platform health, and usage metrics to drive continuous improvement and maximize business impact.
- Mentor and coach frontend engineers and UX practitioners, fostering engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Quality Management System (QMS), regulatory, and accessibility requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related technical discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, frontend development, UX Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience leading frontend engineering initiatives across multiple products, teams, or platforms.
- Proven experience designing, implementing, and governing enterprise-scale Design Systems and reusable component libraries.
- Strong expertise in modern frontend technologies, including Angular, TypeScript, HTML5, CSS/SCSS, and Angular Material.
- Hands-on experience developing and maintaining component libraries using Storybook or similar design system platforms.
- Strong understanding of frontend architecture, component-based design, state management, performance optimization, and modern web application development.
- Experience establishing engineering standards and best practices for reusable, scalable, and maintainable frontend solutions.
- Proficiency with Git-based development workflows, source control, code review processes, and CI/CD practices.
- Experience working within Agile and Scrum software development environments.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and collaborate effectively with Product Management, UX, Human Factors Engineering, Architecture, and Software Development teams.
- Willing and able to commute or travel onsite when needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing software for regulated industries, including medical devices, life sciences, healthcare, or other compliance-driven environments.
- Experience partnering with Human Factors Engineering, UX Research, or User Experience teams to translate user insights into product and platform solutions.
- Strong knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices, including WCAG compliance.
- Experience implementing and managing Design Tokens, Design System tooling, and design-to-development workflows.
- Hands-on experience with modern frontend testing frameworks, including component, accessibility, visual regression, and end-to-end testing.
- Experience contributing to platform engineering, developer enablement, or shared technology initiatives that improve engineering efficiency and consistency.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted software development, UX design tools, and emerging technologies that enhance product development and user experience.
- Experience scaling Design Systems and frontend platforms across multiple products, teams, or business units.
- Knowledge of modern UX architecture patterns, design governance models, and enterprise frontend platform strategies.
