The Opportunity:

The Staff Engineer, Process Control, functions as an integral team member and leader in the Process Control Systems Support Group for Evadale Mill. Position reports to the Manager Process Control and is part of the Production Services support for the mill. Responsibilities include delivering and maintaining reliability of the facility's Quality Control systems and Web Inspection Systems. In this role, you will serve as a technical project lead in the development, installation, integration, implementation, maintenance and administration of Evadale's quality control and web inspection system's hardware, software, and networks. Your performance will directly impact safety/environmental, quality, cost, and productivity results in assigned process areas.

How you will impact Smurfit WestRock:

Primary technical responsibilities include:

  • Follows and adheres to all safety policy and procedures
  • Leads efforts to maintain reliability of QCS (Quality Control Systems) and WIS (Web Inspection System) throughout the mill.
  • Direct supervisor of all QCS/WIS Systems including the QCS/WIS Department personnel.
  • Responsible for setting goals and ensuring that training needs of QCS/WIS Department personnel are met.
  • Ensure all preventive and corrective maintenance activities for QCS hardware and software are properly documented in accordance with ISO requirements.
  • Support configuration, calibration, and defect-classification activities within WIS.
  • Serve as a point of contact for all QCS/WIS issues involving Quality and Production.
  • This function supports communication with Quality and Papermachine Operations
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of spare parts.
  • Ensure documentation of inventories is current and complete.
  • Order spare parts as necessary to maintain required inventory levels.
  • Train Operations personnel across all shifts on WIS usage and appropriate responses to system anomalies.
  • Maintain records of all training activities, including dates and attendees.
  • Takes call on QCS/WIS (Quality Control System/Web Inspection System Engineer).
  • In cooperation with the E/I function within Maintenance, performs preventative and corrective maintenance on QCS/WIS.
  • Oversees software changes & performs backup of software within QCS/WIS
  • Perform troubleshooting and monitoring of controls and processes.
  • Work with supported departments and Engineering to specify and implement capital and process improvement projects.
  • Work on special projects as directed by Process Control Manager.
  • Work with vendors to support equipment, software, and process.
  • Provide backup for call duty personnel on equipment within personal responsibility.
  • Able to climb stairs or ladders to reach QCS/WIS or process equipment.
  • Able to lift and carry replacement equipment (up to 50 pounds) as necessary.
  • Able to walk to equipment throughout the mill.
  • Maintains ISO record keeping as necessary.
  • Work directly with operations, maintenance and control suppliers to trouble shoot daily production issues, resolve long term stability issues, and establish work procedures to sustain process improvement.


Related responsibilities include:

  • On-going facility capital planning focused on sustaining QCS/WIS systems reliability and upgrade needs.
  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance and other Process Control Engineers to understand and address specific QCS/WIS systems challenges and opportunities.
  • Deliver and sustain tools required to efficiently insure control system health and control optimization.
  • Responsible for conducting business with integrity and respect, being accountable, and actively pursuing excellence to help achieve Smurfit WestRock's Path to One goal.


What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical or Chemical disciplines preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years' experience in QCS, WIS, process control or other automation experience to include large-scale upgrades. Paper Industry experience is a plus but is not required.
  • Direct experience with Honeywell, Delta V or Metso/Valmet DCS platforms, and associated configuration is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and establish effective working relationships with various disciplines in the mill.
  • Basic knowledge of networks, switches, PCs, Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and knowledge of various computer software
