Job Req ID: 30143Job Summary:Supermicro is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to develop, review, and improve technical service documentation for complex server, storage, GPU, liquid-cooled, and rack-scale systems.
The successful candidate will work closely with Product Management, Field Service, Training and other subject-matter experts to translate complex technical information into clear, accurate, and field-ready documentation.
This role will focus primarily on service manuals, component-replacement procedures, troubleshooting instructions, technical diagrams, service checklists, and related documentation used by Field Engineers and Service teams. The position will also support customer training proposals, reusable technical content, and documentation standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Includes the following essential duties and responsibilities (other duties may also be assigned):
- Develop, review, and maintain service manuals, component-replacement procedures, troubleshooting guides, work instructions, service checklists, and technical reference materials.
- Ensure documentation is technically accurate, complete, easy to understand, and usable by Field Engineers and Service teams.
- Translate complex product and engineering information into clear, step-by-step service procedures.
- Create and improve technical diagrams, cable maps, component illustrations, system architecture diagrams, flowcharts, and other visual aids.
- Document safety precautions, prerequisites, required tools, supported configurations, and verification steps for service procedures.
- Interview engineers, Product Managers, Field Engineers, trainers, and other subject-matter experts to gather and validate technical information.
- Review products, prototypes, engineering specifications, and existing documentation to identify missing or unclear service information.
- Coordinate documentation reviews, approvals, revisions, and release schedules with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Ensure that documentation remains aligned with product changes, engineering updates, field feedback, training materials, and certification programs.
- Consolidate, organize, and improve existing technical documentation and establish consistent templates, terminology, and writing standards.
- Manage document versions and ensure that approved content is stored and maintained according to applicable document-control and quality requirements.
- Incorporate feedback from Field Service, Training, customers, and partners to continuously improve documentation quality and usability.
- Support the development of customer training proposals, scopes of work, course descriptions, and reusable technical content.
- Contribute to technical and learning-related content that communicates the organization's programs, expertise, and achievements.
- Recommend and help improve the tools, templates, processes, and publishing methods used to create and deliver technical documentation.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Five or more years of experience developing technical documentation, preferably for servers, data-center products, computer hardware, electronics, or other complex technical systems.
- Demonstrated experience writing service manuals, repair procedures, installation guides, troubleshooting guides, work instructions, or similar technical content.
- Strong understanding of computer systems, server hardware, components, networking, storage, or data-center technologies.
- Ability to understand complex technical products and translate engineering information into clear, accurate, user-focused documentation.
- Strong interviewing and information-gathering skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical subject-matter experts.
- Experience creating or editing technical diagrams, illustrations, flowcharts, and other visual documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with strong attention to detail, consistency, grammar, and accuracy.
- Strong project-management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple documentation projects and deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively across Engineering, Product Management, Field Service, Training, Quality, and other global teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Visio.
- Experience with technical-authoring and publishing tools such as Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe InDesign, MadCap Flare, or similar platforms.
- Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, and Photoshop is desirable.
- Experience with structured authoring, content-management systems, DITA/XML, or document-control processes is a plus.
- Experience working within ISO or other quality-management standards is preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Experience documenting server, GPU, liquid-cooling, rack-scale, or data-center hardware.
- Experience observing or performing hardware installation, component replacement, or service procedures.
- Experience developing documentation for global Field Service or technical-support audiences.
- Experience supporting training proposals, customer-facing technical content, or learning and certification programs.
Salary Range$120,000 - $150,000
The salary offered will depend on several factors, including your location, level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience, and comparison to other employees already in this role. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation, such as participation in bonus and equity award programs.
