Atomic - App Innovation & Design

Atomic is building the next generation of trade and workflow automation products for TD Securities' Fixed Income, Foreign Exchange and Commodities businesses. We are looking for a Technical Product Designer who can turn complex, high-value workflows into simple, intuitive products used by front-office and operations teams.

Atomic Innovation is transforming the application landscape across TD Securities.

We are a multidisciplinary team of product designers, engineers, and technology professionals building modern products for some of the bank's most sophisticated business areas. Our portfolio spans Metals, Energy, Foreign Exchange, FX Options, Fixed Income, and Operations, along with the shared FICC Unified Desktop platform that brings these experiences together.

We work directly with Front-Office Sales & Trading users, Operations teams, and subject-matter experts to understand complex workflows and turn them into products that are simpler, faster, and more intuitive. The Opportunity

Atomic is looking for a Senior Back-End Developer to join the team building Atomic FX. Although the role carries a senior title, it is primarily a hands-on individual-contributor position focused on one product rather than technical leadership across the broader Atomic portfolio.

You will work on Atomic FX alongside more senior developers, front-end engineers, product partners, and Foreign Exchange business users. You will learn the workflows behind the product, contribute to technical discussions, build and support back-end services, and help improve the application as user needs evolve.

You do not need to begin the role as capital markets expert or arrive ready to define the architecture independently. You should be curious about Foreign Exchange workflows, comfortable asking questions, receptive to guidance and feedback, and interested in developing your skills within an experienced engineering team.

What You'll Do

Role & Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and maintenance of robust, scalable backend services and APIs using Java (versions 17, and 21) with Spring Boot, supporting critical platforms such as Atomic FX.
• Architect and implement high-performance, secure, and maintainable server-side solutions, integrating with relational databases (MS SQL Server 2012) and ensuring seamless connectivity with front-end applications.
• Collaborate closely with business stakeholders in the Foreign Exchange domain within Capital Markets to translate complex business requirements into technical solutions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
• Design and implement solutions for both on-premises and Azure cloud environments, leveraging best practices for hybrid infrastructure.
• Mentor and guide junior and intermediate developers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, code quality, and adherence to best practices in Java development.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues, driving root cause analysis and implement long-term solutions to enhance system stability and reliability.
• Champion the adoption of modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity, Maven, GitHub), automated testing frameworks, and deployment strategies to improve development efficiency and code quality.
• Ensure backend components are designed for extensibility, security, and compliance with enterprise standards, while adhering to industry best practices.
• Contribute to the evolution of the backend architecture, evaluating and integrating new technologies to keep the platform at the forefront of industry trends.
• Actively participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisions to ensure high-quality deliverables.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies and frameworks in the Java ecosystem, providing recommendations for continuous improvement and innovation.

Who You Are

You are an experienced back-end developer with strong Java fundamentals and a practical approach to software engineering. You can take a well-defined problem, work through the technical details, and deliver reliable code while knowing when to ask for context or support.

You enjoy working as part of a collaborative product team. You are comfortable engaging directly with business users, learning an unfamiliar domain, and working with more senior developers who can provide architectural direction and product context.

You care about code quality, testing, and maintainability, but you do not make solutions more complicated than they need to be. You communicate clearly, respond well to feedback, and take responsibility for the work you deliver.

Most importantly, you are curious and dependable. You want to understand the workflow behind the code, contribute meaningfully to Atomic, and continue developing your engineering judgment through hands-on experience.

Minimum Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on work with Java, Spring Boot, and SQL databases.
• Experience building and maintaining production REST APIs and back-end services.
• Strong understanding of service design, data modelling, concurrency, performance, error handling, testing, and secure development practices.
• Experience with asynchronous or event-driven workflows, messaging or queues, or real-time communication patterns such as WebSocket.
• Experience supporting production systems, diagnosing issues, and contributing to durable fixes.
• Experience with automated testing, code review, source control, build tooling, and continuous integration and delivery practices.
• Ability to work effectively within established architecture and collaborate with developers of different experience levels.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to discuss technical decisions with engineering and business partners.
• A degree, diploma, or equivalent practical experience in computer science, engineering, technology, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are helpful, but they are not required to apply:

• Experience in capital markets, financial services, Foreign Exchange, trading, risk, Operations, or another high-value, time-sensitive domain.
• Experience working directly with business users or subject-matter experts to understand and implement workflow requirements.
• Experience building systems in hybrid environments that span on-premises infrastructure and public cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform or Microsoft Azure.
• Experience with MongoDB or other document databases in addition to relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server.
• Experience with Go or another back-end language alongside Java.
• Experience with observability, performance testing, secure API design, authentication and authorization, or enterprise integration patterns.
• Experience contributing to the modernization of established services or evolving APIs without disrupting users.

Our Engineering Environment

Atomic back-end services are primarily built using Java and Spring Boot. The wider Atomic environment also includes some Go and Node.js services. Our applications use REST APIs, WebSocket, messaging and queue-based patterns, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft SQL Server across on-premises and cloud environments, including Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure.

Our delivery tool chain includes GitHub, Maven, TeamCity, automated testing, code-quality analysis, and continuous integration and delivery practices. You will partner closely with front-end engineers building React and TypeScript applications and with product designers working in Figma.

You are not expected to be an expert in every technology listed. We care more about strong fundamentals, dependable delivery, openness to feedback, and the ability to learn the tools and business context needed for Atomic FX.
