Full Job Description
Your Opportunity

As a Software Engineer (Level 4 / E4) in the Core Platform team, you'll independently own the end-to-end delivery of features - from design through production and ongoing support - that directly impact product scalability, performance, and customer experience. You'll also serve as an on-call first responder for the services your team owns, keeping them reliable in production.

This is a backend-first, full-stack engineering role for someone who loves building high-quality distributed systems, writing clean and scalable code, and taking full ownership of their work from design to production. You'll collaborate closely with product, platform, and related teams to build reliable, production-ready systems at scale.

You'll work on foundational platform capabilities used across multiple Whatfix products, operating at scale and under real-world enterprise reliability, performance, and security constraints. This role offers the opportunity to deepen your technical craft, raise the quality bar on the systems you own, and grow toward broader architectural ownership.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without employer sponsorship, either now or in the future.

What You'll Do
  • Own the full lifecycle of your features - design, task breakup, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and subsequent fixes and improvements
  • Build and evolve scalable backend services, APIs, and data pipelines that power Whatfix products
  • Own the technical design of your features and contribute to broader design discussions within your problem space
  • Break stories and features down into well-scoped tasks, ensuring each can be completed within ~5 days
  • Write clean, concise, well-tested, and maintainable code that others can easily understand
  • Improve the development experience by enhancing dev tooling, test coverage, and code structure
  • Ship features with the right testing, monitoring, and operational readiness
  • Serve as on-call first responder for the software your team owns, resolving issues within SLAs and putting measures in place to reduce recurrence
  • Perform code reviews that uphold engineering standards and that your team finds genuinely helpful
  • Align with adjacent teams on design and code wherever your work touches their codebase

Must-Have Qualifications
  • 4+ years building production-grade backend systems
  • Strong experience with Java (Spring Boot / REST-based services)
  • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
  • Proven ability to own features end-to-end and ship independently (E4 scope)
  • Hands-on experience with unit testing, integration testing, and automation
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines
  • Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, or cloud-native environments
  • Understanding of infrastructure-aware development (deployability, observability, scaling)
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills

Strong Good-to-Have
  • Working experience with NoSQL data stores (Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.)
  • Working experience with monitoring tools like Prometheus / Datadog
  • Working experience with ArgoCD
  • Prior experience working closely with Platform or SRE teams

Why Join Whatfix
  • Build at real enterprise scale: Design and operate distributed backend and platform systems where performance, reliability, and correctness truly matter.
  • Own problems end to end: Engineers at Whatfix have real technical ownership - shaping the design of what they build and how it runs in production.
  • Platform-level impact: Work on foundational capabilities used across multiple products, solving complex, cross-cutting problems with product, platform, and SRE teams.
  • Engineering-led, high-bar culture: We value thoughtful design, clean code, and long-term system health. Growth is driven by impact and ownership - not tenure.
  • Collaborative, low-ego environment: Work with strong engineers who value clarity, pragmatism, and continuous learning.
  • Competitive rewards and long-term growth: Competitive compensation, strong benefits, and clear paths for engineers who want to stay hands-on and go deeper technically.

Perks / Benefits:
  • Equity plan
  • Mac shop, work with the newest technologies
  • Unlimited PTO policy
  • Paid maternity/paternity leave
  • Monthly cell phone stipend
  • Paid UberEats lunches-daily
