The Software Engineer is a mid-level contributor responsible for gathering requirements, designing, developing, implementing, and supporting one or more company applications for various subsidiaries, transforming business requirements into secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions across the full stack and DevSecOps lifecycle.

• Deliver moderately complex features and epics end-to-end, decomposing work, estimating, and planning for yourself and small pods while translating business goals into scalable, performant features that drive outcomes for subsidiaries. • Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to ensure solutions fully leverage technology to improve business processes. • Apply engineering best practices across the full stack, authoring comprehensive unit, integration, and contract tests and introducing performance and resiliency testing where appropriate. • Perform and enforce high-quality peer reviews across the system, upholding and helping refine team development standards and quality expectations. • Strengthen CI/CD pipelines and release practices, including canary, blue/green, and feature flags, owning deployments to non-production and assisting or leading production releases. • Coordinate safe rollbacks when needed and maintain deployment and runbook documentation to improve stability and supportability. • Co-lead backlog refinement and clarify acceptance criteria while producing lightweight design specifications and API/interface contracts that reflect understanding of interfacing systems and downstream impacts. • Apply sound design patterns and make informed trade-offs for performance, stability, and supportability, routinely proposing improvements to reduce technical debt and enhance usability. • Instrument applications with meaningful logging, metrics, and distributed traces; define and tune SLIs/SLOs and alert thresholds. • Analyze telemetry and load/performance test results to identify bottlenecks and implement targeted optimizations and reliability improvements. • Champion secure-by-design practices, including threat modeling, least privilege, and safe secrets management, while managing dependencies and remediating findings promptly. • Contribute to SBOM/dependency hygiene and patch planning, ensuring solutions meet internal controls and compliance requirements. • Triage, research, and resolve second-level incidents, leading or contributing to root cause analysis and post-mortems. • Improve operational runbooks and support procedures and participate in a rotating on-call schedule for production systems. • Provide high-quality support to end users and partner teams. • Lead technical spikes and proof-of-concepts to reduce delivery risk and evaluate tools and patterns that improve developer productivity and system reliability. • Use data and A/B experiments where appropriate to validate approaches. • Produce and maintain system-level documentation, including design decisions, ADRs, interface specifications, and operational runbooks. • Contribute to the internal knowledge base and provide targeted end-user or peer training in one-on-one and small-group settings. • Collaborate closely with product, design, QA, and operations, actively contributing to Agile ceremonies, including planning, reviews, and retrospectives, and occasionally facilitating them. • Mentor junior developers and interns, providing guidance on development standards and code quality and modeling constructive feedback. • Deepen expertise in BRSS applications, business processes, and system interfaces while staying current on relevant frameworks and cloud/DevSecOps practices. • Set development goals with your manager, share learnings with the team, and adapt to new tools, technologies, and processes to accelerate delivery.

Qualifications:

• At least three years of relevant software engineering experience or equivalent demonstrated proficiency. • Advanced proficiency in front-end and back-end engineering, with expertise in one area and a solid foundation in the other (e.g., React/Next.js, Tailwind, Jest for front-end; Node.js/Java and GraphQL/REST for back-end), with the ability to design and implement significant new functionality with minimal supervision. • Proficiency in modern web application architecture and API design, including creating and interpreting design specifications and interface contracts with an understanding of interfacing systems and supported business processes. • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to triage, research, and resolve second-level support incidents and complex defects spanning application, middleware, and infrastructure layers. • Proficiency with databases and data integration, including SQL, Microsoft SQL Server queries, stored procedures, tables, and views, as well as working knowledge of NoSQL where applicable, with the ability to assess and tune performance and scalability. • Demonstrated competency in SDLC and Agile practices (Scrum and Kanban), including backlog refinement, estimation, code review, documentation, and unit, integration, and contract testing. • Hands-on DevSecOps experience, including Git-based workflows, CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, environment management, feature flags, and automated testing to support safe, reliable releases. • Security-minded engineering with practical knowledge of secure coding, dependency and secrets management, remediation of security findings, and alignment with internal controls and compliance expectations. • Performance and reliability awareness, including the ability to instrument applications using logging, metrics, and traces; interpret performance metrics; and implement targeted optimizations to meet SLIs/SLOs before and after implementation. • Clear and effective communication skills, with the ability to interact with technical and business stakeholders at all levels and translate user feedback and business needs into actionable technical improvements. • Ability to thrive with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills to manage multiple concurrent tasks and deliver work on time. • Mentorship and collaboration skills, including conducting high-quality peer reviews, guiding junior engineers on standards and quality expectations, and contributing to team patterns and best practices. • Customer service orientation and a sense of urgency when providing high-quality support to end users and partner teams, including potential participation in rotating on-call support for production systems. • Adaptability and commitment to continuous learning, with the ability to quickly learn new technologies, frameworks, and systems and apply them effectively to real-world projects in the insurance domain. • Proficiency with common IDEs and platforms, including Visual Studio, VS Code, the Atlassian suite, Git source control, and collaboration tools used throughout the delivery lifecycle. • Ability to lead small technical efforts, coordinate contributions across multiple engineers, and deliver system enhancements that consider performance, stability, supportability, and long-term maintainability. • Demonstrates WRBC core competencies, innovation behaviors, and behavioral competencies while performing essential duties and responsibilities, including accountability, communication, customer focus and teamwork, delivering results, flexibility, and technical and job excellence. • Exhibits behavioral role competencies such as being action oriented, possessing business knowledge, critical thinking, customer service orientation, managing information, process management, quality decision making, being a self-starter, and being technically astute.

Education Requirement

• Bachelor’s degree in a software development-related discipline, such as Computer Science, Information Systems Management, Engineering, or a similar field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience as a full-stack software engineer.
