Full Job Description
EBS Snapshots is one of the largest distributed storage systems at AWS, foundational to how AWS operates. EC2 instance launches, cross-region disaster recovery, and backup workflows across AWS all depend on what we build. We're looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a team that owns the EBS Snapshot public APIs, the snapshot control plane, and the distributed metadata backend that powers the service.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You'll lead a team of engineers responsible for systems in the critical path of AWS, balancing customer-facing feature delivery with operational excellence and long-term architectural health. You'll partner closely with senior engineers, principal engineers, and peer managers across EBS and EC2 to drive technical direction, develop your engineers, and deliver against ambitious goals.

We're looking for someone who has experience leading software engineering teams operating distributed systems at scale, who develops engineers across levels, and who thrives in a culture where ownership and impact matter. If you want to lead a team that ships features customers depend on and operates infrastructure that AWS itself depends on, we'd love to talk.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Manager on this team, you will work alongside engineers and leaders who care deeply about performance, availability, scalability, and durability of customer data. Your team will deliver features that solve real customer problems while operating distributed systems in the critical path of AWS. You will have strong ownership over the design, implementation, and operation of a massive scale distributed system, and you will see the impact your team's work has on a wide range of customers from startups to enterprise.

A day in the life

No two days look the same. You might spend the morning in 1:1s with your engineers, the afternoon partnering with senior engineers on a design review, and end the day aligning with peer managers on cross-team delivery.

You'll balance hands-on technical leadership with people management, customer-facing feature delivery, operational excellence, and long-term strategy. We value managers who lead through ambiguity, develop their engineers, and operate as part of a leadership team that shapes direction beyond a single team's scope.

You'll have real ownership from day one.

About the team

We're intentional about building a welcoming team culture, and we're looking for someone curious, empathetic, and motivated to help amplify that.
