Full Job Description
Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer, Light Rail to play a key role in delivering innovative, reliable, and high-performing rail systems that support safe and efficient transit operations. This position will lead systems engineering activities across the project lifecycle, helping shape solutions from early planning and design through integration, testing, commissioning, and final delivery. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and delivery partners, the Sr Systems Engineer will help drive technical excellence, ensure alignment across complex interfaces, and support the successful execution of major light rail programs. This is an opportunity to contribute to impactful transportation projects, bring strong technical leadership to complex challenges, and help deliver systems that improve mobility for communities.

Role accountabilities:

In this role, you will lead systems engineering activities across the full project lifecycle for light rail and CBTC train control systems, guiding work from requirements definition and architecture through design, integration, verification, validation, testing, and commissioning. You will take ownership of the systems engineering lifecycle, ensuring requirements are clearly defined, fully traceable, and effectively managed through implementation and final delivery. You will also play a central role in maintaining alignment across technical disciplines and project phases so that solutions are delivered in a structured, reliable, and efficient manner.

You will also be responsible for advancing system assurance, safety, and compliance across the program. This includes leading and supporting system and safety assurance audits, applying relevant rail standards and safety frameworks, establishing RAMS objectives, and contributing to the development of safety cases and certification documentation. Success in this area will require strong oversight of standards compliance, integration practices, data governance, and security protocols, along with the ability to address and close change requests, NCRs, and RFIs tied to system and safety assurance expectations.

A key part of the position will involve overseeing system integration and validation for critical rail subsystems, including ATO, ATP, and ATS. You will develop and implement verification and validation strategies across simulation, factory testing, site acceptance, and field testing activities to confirm that functional, operational, performance, and safety requirements are achieved. The role will also involve supporting testing and commissioning efforts, troubleshooting complex integration issues, and helping drive timely resolution of technical challenges that emerge during delivery.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and delivery partners to manage technical interfaces and promote a coordinated project approach. Responsibilities will include producing and reviewing core engineering and compliance documentation, such as system design packages, interface control documents, test plans, and validation reports. In addition, you will provide technical leadership within the team by mentoring junior engineers, encouraging best practices in systems engineering, and helping strengthen the overall quality and consistency of project delivery.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Systems, Electrical, Control or related engineering discipline
  • 12+ years' CBTC/signalling systems engineering experience
  • Proven application of INCOSE V-Model, requirements engineering and V&V
  • Deep knowledge of CENELEC 50126/50128/50129 and safety/RAMS processes
  • Practical experience with ATO, ATP and ATS design, integration and testing
  • Skilled with requirements and systems tools (e.g., DOORS, SysML/EA) and CAD/test tools
  • Field experience in FAT, SAT, commissioning and troubleshooting
  • Strong technical writing, communication and team leadership skills

Preferred
  • PE or relevant professional certification
  • Experience with major CBTC vendors (Siemens, Hitachi, Alstom) and vendor-specific ATO/ATP/ATS implementations
  • Familiarity with railway operations, communications networks and SCADA integration

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
