As a Senior System Development Engineer in Networking, you'll have a unique opportunity to shape the development of our network - a fundamental contributor to the success of AWS that lets us scale existing services and launch new ones. The Release Engineering and System Test organization owns end-to-end, system-level qualification of platforms and OS, the final gate before software is released to production. In this role, you'll build autonomous test systems that qualify new platforms and releases at scale.
This is a hands-on builder role at the intersection of software engineering, test infrastructure, and network systems. You'll develop production-quality automated test systems, integrate them with lab and orchestration services, and drive the reliability, efficiency, and operability of the qualification pipeline that every release depends on. You'll relentlessly improve the stability of the existing network by developing test automation for new hardware and software platforms, working closely with our Network Engineering teams to understand features and technical implementation and to build test suites that emulate real-world environments.
The ideal candidate has spent time in a similar role. Experience with industry-leading automation and CI/CD tools and with IXIA traffic generators (or similar) is a distinct advantage. You strive for simplicity and demonstrate significant creativity and high judgment. Your expertise is both deep and broad - you're hands-on, producing detailed technical work as well as high-level systems architecture.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain automated test systems that scale across platforms and network roles and operationalize qualification suites in CI and nightly regression pipelines
- Integrate test systems with lab infrastructure and orchestration services for device lifecycle management
- Own the reliability and maintainability of your components - eliminate flakiness, drive down qualification runtimes, and continuously improve the reliability of the test systems
- Show creativity and initiative to improve product test coverage and effectiveness
- Debug complex, cross-layer failures spanning test infrastructure, software, hardware and and drive root-cause analysis
- Partner with software, hardware and networking teams release engineering teams to simulate complex real world network designs
- Raise the engineering bar through design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring of junior engineers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby experience
- Experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering
- Experience building tools for building, testing, releasing or monitoring
- Experience with Linux/Unix
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with distributed systems at scale
- Knowledge of Layer 2/3 networking protocols, including hands-on experience with load balancers, switches, routers, etc.
- Experience qualifying networking hardware platforms and managing cross-team release-qualification dependencies.
- Familiarity with network test tools, traffic generators (e.g., IXIA/Spirent)
