Full Job Description
Senior / Staff Power Conversion Engineer Location: California Employment type: Permanent, full-time
The Role
Lead the development of power converters from requirements and architecture through circuit design, prototyping, validation and manufacturing. This hands-on role combines system-level analysis with hardware development, with responsibility for efficiency, performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Own converter development from specification and topology selection through modelling, schematic design, prototyping, validation and production. Select power semiconductors and design gate drive and protection circuits, analysing switching behaviour, losses and thermal performance. Develop modulation techniques, control strategies and state machines, alongside analog, digital and mixed-signal circuitry for sensing and microprocessor-based control. Specify magnetics and capacitors, and guide PCB layout to address parasitic inductance and capacitance, EMC, reliability and manufacturability. Conduct simulation, benchmarking, laboratory testing and debugging using appropriate engineering software and diagnostic equipment. Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, controls and manufacturing teams, providing technical guidance and mentoring.
Required Experience
Five or more years in power electronics, with hands-on experience developing high-voltage converters, including isolated topologies, power factor correction and DC/DC stages. Strong understanding of AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC conversion, variable-frequency converter control, and modulation strategies for high- and low-voltage systems. Experience with Si, SiC or GaN devices, semiconductor selection, gate drive and protection design, loss modelling and thermal analysis. Strong analog, digital and mixed-signal design skills, including microprocessor interfaces, control circuitry, magnetics and capacitor selection. Experience with schematic capture, circuit simulation, power electronics PCB design and relevant modelling tools. Ability to investigate technical issues, make sound engineering decisions and take designs through to completion.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with a focus on power electronics. Knowledge of electrical safety, EMC, environmental and reliability requirements for commercial power electronics. Experience designing fault-tolerant systems, including fault detection, protection and recovery.
