Spoonflower (part of Shutterfly) is evolving its eCommerce platform into a modern, service-oriented architecture supporting a global, made-to-order retail environment. We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer III to build and evolve backend platform capabilities that support product data, commerce integrations, and downstream consumer systems. This role is for a strong hands-on engineer who can independently execute complex technical projects, operate production systems, and partner with other teams to deliver scalable platform capabilities.
What You'll Do

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs primarily using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop and support applications running in AWS and Kubernetes-based environments.
• Build integrations between internal platform services and external systems including commerce, search, analytics, and other downstream consumers.
• Work with relational databases, DynamoDB, and event-driven architectures to support product data, catalog, and commerce capabilities.
• Execute complex technical projects involving distributed systems, data flows, and service integrations.
• Contribute to GraphQL and REST APIs that power internal and customer-facing experiences.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues across cloud infrastructure, applications, databases, and service-to-service integrations.
• Improve reliability, observability, performance, and operational excellence of platform services.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable solutions that support Spoonflower's evolving platform architecture.
• Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions while mentoring other engineers through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Strong experience developing backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Experience designing, building, and supporting REST and GraphQL APIs.
• Experience working with relational databases, data modeling, and data integration patterns.
• Experience building and operating applications in AWS.
• Experience deploying and supporting applications in Kubernetes-based environments.
• Experience working with distributed systems, service integrations, and event-driven architectures.
• Demonstrated ability to independently execute complex technical projects from implementation through production support.
• Experience troubleshooting production issues across applications, databases, cloud infrastructure, and service integrations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with DynamoDB or other NoSQL databases.
• Experience with Ruby, Python, or Rust.
• Experience building commerce, catalog, product information, or integration platforms.
• Experience integrating third-party SaaS platforms and vendor services.
• Experience with OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, or modern search and retrieval technologies.
• Experience supporting high-scale customer-facing applications.
• Experience working in eCommerce, retail, marketplace, or similar digital commerce environments.

The compensation package for this role is based on multiple factors, such as job level, responsibilities, location, and candidate experience. The base pay ranges included below are specific to the locations listed, and may not be applicable to other locations.

Connecticut and New York: [$117,750-152,000]

Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and Washington: [$117,750-140,750]

Nevada: [$110,500-152,000]

Maryland and New Jersey: [$127,250-152,000]

Hawaii : [$117,750-132,250]
