Full Job Description
About the Team
Agent Factory is where Workday's next chapter gets built. Within our HELP engineering organization, our cross-functional teams bring together product leaders, machine learning engineers, UX designers, and full-stack engineers to create intelligent agents used by millions of people.

This is production-grade AI embedded deeply into Workday's platform-not research experimentation or maintenance work. Teams own problems end to end and solve real customer challenges at global scale. You'll work at the intersection of AI, platform architecture, and human workflows, with the autonomy to shape how intelligent agents reason, act, and scale responsibly.

High trust, high expectations, and real impact. Engineering, but brighter.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Agent Factory, you'll design and deliver full-stack applications and platform services that bring Workday's AI agents to life.

Working within a cross-functional pod, you'll lead the architecture and implementation of complex features spanning modern user interfaces, backend microservices, Workday platform domain layers, data models, APIs, asynchronous workflows, and delivery infrastructure.

You'll turn powerful technology into secure, accessible, and reliable products that simplify HR and Finance workflows. You'll also help improve system performance, engineering practices, and team delivery while mentoring engineers and collaborating closely with Product Management, UX, Machine Learning, and platform teams.

Your Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and operate end-to-end features spanning frontend applications, backend microservices, Workday platform domain layers, and CI/CD infrastructure.
  • Build modern, accessible user experiences using frameworks such as React and contribute to component libraries, state management, and build optimization.
  • Develop resilient, scalable RESTful APIs using established authentication and authorization patterns.
  • Design business logic, data models, and APIs that support lifecycle management, cross-environment delivery, and full-stack integration.
  • Lead the architecture and delivery of complex features, asynchronous workflows, and data-processing systems.
  • Integrate AI and machine learning services into customer-facing HR and Finance workflows.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks across the stack, including database queries, indexing, service interactions, and frontend rendering.
  • Apply secure coding practices, threat modeling, vulnerability management, automated testing, and observability throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Create architectural models, system diagrams, and technical documentation that align cross-team strategy.
  • Own services from development through production-you build it, you run it.
  • Participate in code reviews, Agile ceremonies, operational support, and continuous delivery activities.
  • Partner with Product Managers, UX designers, Machine Learning engineers, and platform teams to deliver cohesive product experiences.
  • Mentor engineers, share knowledge, establish engineering best practices, and help raise the technical bar.
  • Improve refinement, testing, and delivery processes to increase team effectiveness and predictability.

About You

Basic Qualifications
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including significant full-stack development experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with backend web development frameworks; Python frameworks such as Flask, Django, or FastAPI are preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience working with relational databases; PostgreSQL is preferred.

Other Qualifications
  • Strong experience building modern web applications using React or a comparable frontend framework.
  • Deep knowledge of backend service architecture, microservice patterns, and REST API design.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating SaaS products in cloud environments.
  • Proficiency in one or more backend languages, such as Python, Kotlin, or Java.
  • Experience with TypeScript, frontend state management, component libraries, and modern build tooling.
  • Strong understanding of distributed-system architecture and its reliability, consistency, scalability, and operational trade-offs.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases, including query analysis and indexing optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD pipeline automation.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices, automated testing, production observability, and incident support.
  • Solid understanding of secure coding, threat modeling, and vulnerability management tools such as Snyk or SonarQube.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and optimize distributed-system performance at scale.
  • Experience leading technical architecture and delivering complex capabilities across multiple application layers.
  • Proven success mentoring engineers and driving engineering excellence across teams.
  • Strong debugging, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous or complex problems into clear, thoughtful solutions.
  • Experience working in fast-paced Agile environments using Scrum practices and Git-based workflows.
  • Commitment to accessibility, inclusion, continuous learning, and team-oriented delivery.
  • Experience with AWS or GCP infrastructure.
  • Experience integrating machine learning services or data pipelines into web applications.
  • Experience with complex content systems, such as rich-text editors or document-parsing tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of WCAG 2.1 or WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards.

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we're combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.
