Senior R&D Engineer, Mechanical

As a Mechanical Engineer 3, you will play a critical role in shaping the next generation of surgical robotic systems for joint replacement. Based in Pittsburgh, PA, this role offers the opportunity to lead meaningful engineering work from early concept through production while collaborating with passionate experts across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and clinical teams. Your work will directly impact surgeons and patients around the world.

What will you be doing?
  • Lead or co lead the development of mechanical subsystems within our surgical robotics ecosystem from concept through first production runs
  • Design and develop complex medical device components and assemblies, including detailed drawings, models, and technical documentation
  • Define, interpret, and support detailed requirements and specifications throughout the product lifecycle
  • Build, test, and analyze prototypes against requirements and specifications, including tolerance analyses of complex assemblies
  • Participate in and lead detailed design reviews across multiple development phases
  • Collaborate closely with cross functional partners including electrical, software, firmware, quality, manufacturing, systems, regulatory, marketing, and program management teams
  • Work with suppliers to source prototype components and understand manufacturing capabilities and limitations
  • Support non surgical and cadaveric testing to inform product design and sales support activities
  • Contribute to innovation through novel ideas, concepts, and support of the intellectual property portfolio
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and research methods relevant to medical robotics

What will you need to be successful?
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a related field with a minimum of five years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with three years of experience, or a PhD with one year of experience
  • Experience in orthopaedic product development, electromechanical devices and controls, or closely related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to lead subsystem development with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment
  • Experience with complex electromechanical assemblies and medical device development
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and experience with tolerance analysis
  • Experience using digital simulation tools such as FEA or CFD is preferred
  • Interest or experience in robotic systems is a plus
