CBC News is looking for a creative editorial leader with sharp news judgment, outstanding programming skills, and an audience-first mindset to lead The National, CBC’s award-winning nightly newscast.
In this key leadership role, you will oversee the program’s editorial and visual storytelling standards, supervise team members, effectively communicate story expectations and direction, stimulate engaging discussions, execute responsive live strategy, lead breaking news coverage and the production of the newscast and its various elements on all platforms.
You must be able to react decisively to major news developments, reshape shows on the fly, and create live content optimized for on-demand audiences. You have demonstrated experience shaping and leading a network news program, working with and supporting hosts, producers, writers and associate producers, and taking shows to air from a live control room. You have the highest level of creative thinking and an ability to originate and develop innovative program concepts or treatments.
Reporting to the Executive Producer of Live & Daily News, Evenings, you ensure all programming is of the highest quality and adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Key Tasks:Editorial Direction and Supervise Assignments: Determine story priorities, develop creative treatments, and expertly guide teams through live, breaking, and ongoing news coverage.
Manage Production & Broadcast: Exercise editorial responsibility over daily production and live broadcasting. Co-ordinate resources and determine the look, style, and pace of the lineup to maintain consistency with network mandates. Thrive under intense deadline pressures.
Change Agent: Drives continuous improvement, agile and adaptable in transforming newsroom structures and roles, and lead transitions. You understand what motivates people. You welcome feedback and carefully consider that input as you align your team around shared goals. You celebrate success and encourage continuous improvement.
Foster Collaboration: Facilitate open, inclusive meetings and communication. Collaborate across CBC News platforms to co-ordinate content and planning.
Team Leadership: Actively support staff development, provide ongoing constructive feedback and coaching. Connect regularly with senior leadership about staffing and scheduling requirements and team culture.
Champion Audience Growth: Translate insights and data to guide content decisions to expand our reach to new and younger news consumers, and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians.
Maintain Standards: Strictly uphold CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices at all times.
Operational Support: Step in to perform all or part of the functions of an equivalent or lower classification as needed.
Experience: Minimum of seven years in broadcast journalism, with a university degree or college diploma in journalism, video production, or a related field.
Live Broadcast Expertise: Proven experience directing live and breaking news programming, including production planning and resource co-ordination. Demonstrated ability as a programmer with a keen ear for pacing, tone, and visual presentation.
Technical Proficiency: Mandatory experience taking programs to air in an automated control room, alongside highly developed production skills for a variety of formats. Clear grasp on original, video and graphic storytelling techniques, including writing, editing and post-production. Excellent writing, vetting and production skills.
Critical thinking: Exceptional problem-solving skills to navigate fast-moving, high-pressure news situations. You're adept at verifying and fact-checking content.
Broad Knowledge Base: Deep interest and understanding across topics such as politics, world affairs, business, science, sports, entertainment, and health.
Mentorship Skills: Superior coaching abilities to support developing journalists, veteran staff, and on-air hosts. Exceptional communication, organizational, and feedback skills.
Inclusivity: Strong knowledge and understanding of, and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada. Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures, opinions and experiences that make up the country. Elevates diverse perspectives, ideas and differing points of view.
Industry Awareness: A deep commitment to public broadcasting, understanding of modern industry trends, ability to identify legal and ethical issues in journalism, and application of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Operational requirements:
This is a full-time permanent position and you must be able to work on-site in the CBC Toronto Broadcast Centre. You will be expected to work overtime, including early mornings, evenings and weekends if news is breaking. Familiarity with technology including iNews toolbar, DTV, Avid Media Central, Ross Overdrive, and Google tools for content creation, distribution, and planning.
