Senior Electrical EngineerLocation: Richmond, VA 23220Your ImpactAs a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you will own the electrical design of high-current solid-state switching platforms that power mission-critical environments. Your work will directly influence the reliability, protection strategy, and performance of systems where failure is not an option. You will lead detailed schematic design for SCR/thyristor-based switching architectures, shaping protection strategies, fault response behavior, and thermal performance at the system level. This role blends deep technical expertise with cross-functional leadership, partnering with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and compliance teams to bring robust, UL-certified power platforms to market.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities- Contributing to system-level architecture and electrical subsystem definition for high-current solid-state switching equipment
- Owning detailed power and control schematic design for SCR/thyristor-based switching platforms
- Designing and optimizing critical circuits including:
- Isolated gate drive and firing circuits
- Snubber networks and dv/dt protection
- di/dt limiting strategies
- Fault commutation and semiconductor protection mechanisms
- Performing thermal analysis and Safe Operating Area (SOA) evaluations for high-power semiconductor modules
- Conducting short-circuit, overload, fault current, and protection coordination studies
- Reviewing PCB layouts for high-current routing, creepage/clearance compliance, isolation integrity, and EMC performance
- Supporting high-current validation and lab testing activities (up to 1600A)
- Participating in cross-functional design reviews and providing technical guidance to firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing teams
- Supporting compliance-driven development and UL certification efforts for low-voltage power electronics products
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's preferred)
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in industrial power electronics design
- Proven experience designing schematics for high-current systems
- Deep expertise in SCR/thyristor-based solid-state switching systems
- Experience developing industrial power electronics equipment such as inverters, converters, or static switching systems
- Familiarity with UL requirements and NEC guidelines for low-voltage power equipment
- Proficiency with schematic design tools such as Altium Designer or OrCAD
- Experience reviewing PCB layouts in high-power applications
- Working knowledge of EMC/EMI mitigation techniques in power electronics
Preferred Qualifications- Experience supporting products through UL certification or compliance testing
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or LTspice
- Background in redundant or high-reliability power architectures
- Experience with FPGA/DSP-based control platforms for power switching applications
