Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Non-Ferrous Buyer to join our commercial team and lead the sourcing and procurement of non-ferrous scrap metals. This role is ideal for a commercially minded buyer who understands the non-ferrous scrap market, knows how to evaluate material and recovery yields, and can make sound purchasing decisions in a highly competitive, price-sensitive environment. The Senior Non-Ferrous Buyer will be responsible for developing and expanding supplier relationships, negotiating purchases, monitoring commodity markets, and ensuring a consistent flow of quality material while protecting company margins. This is a highly relationship-driven and market-focused position requiring strong knowledge of aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, and specialty/high-temperature alloys, as well as the ability to respond quickly to changing market conditions. This position can be worked either remotely or at our US HQ in Camden, NJ. The pay for this position is $140 - 160k/yr.
Key Responsibilities
• Monitor market conditions and price movements for aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, and specialty alloys.
• Develop and adjust buying strategies based on commodity price volatility, market demand, mill consumption, export opportunities, and other market factors.
• Source non-ferrous scrap from a variety of suppliers, including industrial accounts, peddlers, demolition contractors, and other recycling yards.
• Negotiate purchase prices, payment terms, freight, and delivery schedules to maximize profitability and protect company margins.
• Identify new supply opportunities and develop relationships that expand the regional supplier base.
• Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with existing and prospective suppliers.
• Conduct regular supplier site visits to strengthen relationships, assess material quality, and identify new purchasing opportunities.
• Evaluate material grades, specifications, and recovery yields to make informed buying decisions.
• Monitor freight and logistics costs and incorporate them into purchasing decisions.
• Analyze market data, pricing indexes, and other commercial information to support buying strategies.
• Identify and mitigate risks related to commodity price volatility, supply chain disruptions, material quality, and regulatory changes.
• Work collaboratively with internal commercial, operations, logistics, and other teams to ensure consistent material flow.
• Maintain high ethical standards and ensure purchasing activities are conducted in accordance with company policies and applicable requirements.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience purchasing non-ferrous metals, preferably within the recycling, metals trading, commodities, or related industries.
• Deep working knowledge of non-ferrous scrap grades, specifications, and recovery yields.
• Proven experience purchasing aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, and specialty/high-temperature alloys.
• Demonstrated wholesale or commercial purchasing experience with significant responsibility for sourcing and negotiating material.
• Strong understanding of freight, logistics, and transportation costs.
• Strong negotiation skills with the ability to balance supplier relationships with profitability and margin objectives.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret commodity market data, pricing indexes, and market trends.
• Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
• Ability to make sound commercial decisions in a fast-paced, price-sensitive environment.
• Strategic and entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify new supply opportunities.
• Strong ethical standards, sound judgment, and commitment to compliance.
