Job DescriptionRole OverviewAs Senior Manager, Technical Documentation, you will lead the documentation operating model for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure data center operations, ensuring critical procedures, standards, playbooks, knowledge articles, and turnover documentation are accurate, controlled, field-usable, and aligned to operational risk requirements. This role is responsible for building and managing the systems, governance, and team capability required to keep operational documentation current across a rapidly scaling data center portfolio.
You will serve as a senior people leader within Central Data Center Operations, partnering with Facilities Operations, Site Readiness, Site Deployment, Commissioning, Engineering, Reliability, Safety, Security, Compliance, Training, and vendor teams to create documentation that supports safe execution, consistent operations, incident readiness, maintenance quality, and clean operational handoff.
This is not a general writing role. It is an operational documentation leadership role responsible for translating complex technical processes into controlled, repeatable, and auditable content that enables data center teams to execute safely and consistently at hyperscale.
Key Responsibilities- Own the technical documentation strategy and governance model for Central Data Center Operations, including documentation standards, lifecycle management, approval workflows, version control, ownership, and publishing discipline.
- Lead and develop a team of documentation managers, technical writers, procedure specialists, knowledge managers, or matrixed contributors supporting data center operations content across the portfolio.
- Establish and maintain enterprise documentation standards for SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, runbooks, maintenance work instructions, site readiness guides, turnover packages, knowledge articles, escalation guides, and operational playbooks.
- Partner with subject matter experts across facilities operations, engineering, commissioning, deployment, reliability, safety, security, compliance, and training to convert technical requirements into clear, actionable, field-ready procedures.
- Create operating mechanisms that keep documentation aligned with infrastructure changes, commissioning outcomes, CMMS activation, incident learnings, maintenance strategy, vendor scope changes, safety requirements, and operational risk controls.
- Drive documentation quality through structured reviews, procedure validation, readability standards, risk checks, field feedback loops, audit trails, and periodic refresh cycles.
- Ensure critical procedures are written for safe execution in active data center environments, including clear prerequisites, roles and responsibilities, step sequencing, risk controls, rollback criteria, communications, and escalation paths.
- Develop taxonomy, templates, metadata standards, document repositories, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms that improve searchability, adoption, compliance visibility, and content health across sites and regions.
- Partner with Training and Operations leaders to ensure documentation supports onboarding, qualification, recurrence training, abnormal-event readiness, and consistent execution across site teams.
- Measure and report documentation health, including content currency, review compliance, open gaps, field adoption, critical procedure readiness, audit findings, and systemic documentation risks.
- Manage documentation-related vendor support, tooling, content migration, localization, or digitization efforts where applicable, ensuring quality, security, and operational usability standards are met.
- Champion a culture of clarity, procedural discipline, safety, continuous improvement, and accountability, ensuring documentation reduces human error and strengthens operational resilience.
ResponsibilitiesIdeal Candidate Profile- 8+ years of experience in technical documentation, operations documentation, knowledge management, data center operations, critical facilities, infrastructure operations, engineering support, or similarly complex technical environments.
- 3+ years of experience leading teams, programs, vendors, or cross-functional documentation initiatives in large-scale, operationally intensive organizations.
- Experience building documentation systems for mission-critical environments, including SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, runbooks, maintenance procedures, knowledge bases, audit documentation, or controlled operating standards.
- Strong understanding of data center operations or critical infrastructure, including electrical, mechanical, controls, network, safety, change management, incident response, maintenance, and operational turnover concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to work with technical subject matter experts and translate complex field processes into clear, accurate, and executable procedures.
- Experience implementing documentation governance, content lifecycle controls, review cycles, version management, metadata standards, content quality metrics, and continuous improvement mechanisms.
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, Operations, Information Systems, English, Communications, or related field preferred; equivalent technical operations experience will be considered.
Skills and Competencies- Senior-level documentation leadership with strong operational judgment and the ability to prioritize documentation work based on safety, reliability, compliance, and execution risk.
- Excellent technical writing, editing, information architecture, and content governance skills for complex infrastructure environments.
- Ability to create concise, field-usable procedures that reduce ambiguity, improve repeatability, and support safe execution during normal operations, maintenance, deployment, and abnormal conditions.
- Strong stakeholder management across operations, engineering, commissioning, deployment, reliability, safety, security, compliance, training, and vendor teams.
- Strong program management discipline, including planning, prioritization, dependency management, issue tracking, metrics, reporting, and executive-ready communication.
- High attention to detail in procedure accuracy, terminology, version control, approval records, document hierarchy, and content consistency across a global portfolio.
- Ability to lead through influence, build trusted relationships with technical teams, and challenge unclear or incomplete documentation before it becomes operational risk.
- Bias for scalable mechanisms, standardized templates, automation, digitization, knowledge reuse, and continuous improvement.
Preferred Skills / Certifications- Experience in hyperscale data centers, cloud infrastructure, colocation environments, utilities, industrial operations, manufacturing, aviation, healthcare, energy, or other mission-critical settings is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing controlled documentation for SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, change management, incident response, maintenance programs, safety procedures, commissioning turnover, or regulatory/audit requirements.
- Familiarity with CMMS, DCIM, BMS, EPMS, SCADA, ticketing systems, learning management systems, document management systems, knowledge bases, or content management platforms.
- Experience with structured authoring, content taxonomy, metadata, document control, SharePoint/Confluence-style knowledge repositories, XML/DITA concepts, or digital procedure platforms is a plus.
- Certifications or training in technical communication, knowledge management, ITIL, PMP, Lean, Six Sigma, quality management, document control, or safety/compliance frameworks are a plus.
- Experience creating documentation for global audiences, multi-site operations, regulated environments, or teams with varying levels of technical depth.
Physical Demands / Work EnvironmentThis is a mission-critical documentation leadership role supporting 24/7 data center operations where safety, uptime, procedural accuracy, and operational consistency are essential. Regular attendance, collaboration across time zones, schedule flexibility, and occasional support during major incidents, readiness milestones, audits, or urgent documentation updates may be required.
To perform these duties, you must be able to work in office, remote collaboration, construction, campus, and active data center environments as needed; walk sites; observe field procedures; participate in readiness reviews; and safely engage in documentation validation activities, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Market AlignmentThis role profile reflects common marketplace expectations for senior technical documentation and data center operations documentation leadership roles at hyperscale and mission-critical infrastructure organizations. Comparable postings and public role descriptions emphasize clear technical documentation, operational process improvement, data center procedure discipline, mission-critical services, physical infrastructure operations, standardization, knowledge systems, and documentation that supports safe, repeatable execution in high-availability environments.
