What The Role Is

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Senior Manager, Energy Management will lead a team responsible for managing market and volumetric risk within Clearway's portfolio of utility-scale assets. The Senior Manager will have primary responsibility for executing market positions and hedging activity in close partnership with the Director, Market Strategy, who sets the company's overarching portfolio and hedging strategy. The Senior Manager will work in close coordination with Business Development, Origination, Asset Management, and Operations to effectively de-risk and optimize Clearway's overall market positions.

What You'll Be Doing

Position Management
  • Lead the Energy Management team's execution of asset hedging and optimization activity across Clearway's renewable and conventional asset portfolio.
  • Manage Clearway's market portfolio exposure in compliance with corporate and project-level trading policies.
  • Engage with QSEs, trading platforms, and/or other parties to execute transactions in real-time, day-ahead, week-ahead, or balance-of-month markets.
  • Execute Capacity, Resource Adequacy, and transmission hedging strategies established by the Director, Market Strategy.
  • Execute gas trading strategies established by the Director, Market Strategy to help mitigate risk for the company's conventional assets.
  • Execute alternative hedge structures and structured products, in coordination with Origination, Business Development, and Asset Management, that support risk management and optimization at a project or portfolio level.
  • Lead commercial efforts to restructure contractual agreements to better enable risk management and optimization activities.
  • Lead efforts to integrate battery storage optimization into the broader energy management scope.

Fundamental Analysis
  • Monitor near-term energy market fundamentals - weather, supply, load, and transmission conditions - to inform day-to-day trading and hedge execution decisions.
  • Partner with the Director, Market Strategy to ensure execution activity reflects the latest fundamental views.
  • Manage internal personnel, services/subscriptions, and 3rd parties to enable oversight and mitigation of market and volumetric risk factors including weather, transmission, regulatory, and other supply/load drivers.
  • Provide recurring and ad-hoc updates to internal stakeholders and financial partners on execution results and market conditions.

Governance, Compliance & Administration
  • Ensure strict compliance with established energy and risk guidelines.
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Risk to ensure compliance and adherence to risk policies and participate in Energy Risk Committee discussions along with senior leadership.
  • Interface with Business Development, Finance, and Asset Management to ensure smooth transition of projects into commercial operation and energy management scope.

Due Diligence in support of M&A and Project Investments
  • Perform project evaluations, project agreement reviews, and due diligence and make recommendations in support of acquisitions, divestitures, and/or investments in company-developed or repowered projects.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related quantitative field required.
  • 7+ years of energy industry experience in portfolio optimization, energy risk mitigation, energy hedging and trading, contract administration, project finance, or other commercial engagements.
  • Expert understanding of power markets, including forwards, futures, swaps, and options.
  • Direct experience in one or more of the following:
    • Valuing and transacting Resource Adequacy and Capacity products
    • Valuing and transacting electricity futures products bilaterally or on an organized exchange.
    • Valuing and transacting transmission hedging products
    • ISDAs, credit support annexes, and other enabling agreements that govern energy commodities, products, and instruments
  • Experience working with variable generators, batteries, and natural gas plants.
  • Strong business and financial savvy, with the ability to support a high-performance organization that delivers operational excellence and meets or exceeds financial targets.
  • Highly proficient in developing sophisticated models to analyze and identify energy market risk, with strong business analytics skills.
  • Builds strong relationships with credit and risk professionals, internally and externally, to ensure adherence to established credit and risk policies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a clear, concise manner.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure in a demanding environment, think creatively, manage competing priorities, and maintain strong attention to detail.

What Would Be Nice
  • MBA or MS in a related field.
  • Experience with Energy Trading Risk Management (ETRM) systems.

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations

$185,000-$215,000 USD
