Exciting Opportunity at MSK: Lead Blood Bank Operations Across a World-Class Cancer Center

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is seeking an experienced laboratory leader to join our Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) as Senior Manager, Blood Bank.

In this highly visible leadership role, you'll oversee Blood Bank operations across multiple locations, including our Center for Laboratory Medicine, the Main Hospital Rapid Response Laboratory, David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care, and transfusion services at regional sites. Working closely with the Associate Director of Laboratory Medicine, you'll lead operational excellence, regulatory readiness, quality initiatives, and the development of a high-performing team supporting complex oncology patients.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Associate Director, Laboratory Medicine, the Senior Manager, Blood Bank is responsible for the administrative, technical, and operational oversight of Blood Bank and transfusion services across multiple MSK locations. This leader ensures standardized workflows, regulatory compliance, quality, staffing, and operational performance while partnering with physicians, laboratory leadership, and clinical teams to support exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational leadership for Blood Bank services at our Center for Laboratory Medicine, Main Hospital Rapid Response Laboratory, David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care, and regional transfusion locations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop laboratory supervisors and technical staff while fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.
  • Ensure compliance with all NYS, AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and institutional regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee quality management initiatives, inspections, accreditation readiness, competency assessments, and corrective actions.
  • Partner with physicians and laboratory leadership to optimize workflows, improve service delivery, and implement operational improvements.
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, recruitment, employee development, and performance management.
  • Participate in budgeting, resource planning, vendor management, and capital equipment planning.
  • Support implementation of new technologies, instrumentation, and process improvement initiatives across multiple laboratory locations.


Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
  • Strong working knowledge of Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine, including familiarity with AABB standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Progressive laboratory leadership experience managing Blood Bank operations and technical staff (10 years).
  • Experience leading quality initiatives, inspections, accreditation, and regulatory compliance.


Preferred
  • ASCP certification.
  • Experience overseeing laboratory operations across multiple sites.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or complex healthcare system.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and process improvement methodologies.


Schedule
  • Location: The Center for Laboratory Medicine, 327 East 64th Street, New York, NY 10065,
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM or 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. Flexibility to support operational needs, special projects, inspections, or urgent laboratory issues as needed.
  • Reports to Associate Director, Laboratory Medicine
