The Position
Senior Histotechnician

The Opportunity

This position is based in Tucson, AZ, on site.

Responsibilities

Histotechniques (Tissue Sectioning and Staining)

  • Comprehensive Histology Skills: Expert in end-to-end tissue preparation, including grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, and cell block preparation.
  • Advanced Staining & Reagent Management: Highly proficient in primary, special, and advanced staining on automated platforms, with full capabilities in antibody optimization (titers/dilutions) and reagent lot verification.
  • Laboratory Operations & QA: Works independently to troubleshoot protocols and validations, while managing, authoring, and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Quality and Safety

  • Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance: Strictly adheres to FDA, OSHA, ISO, and GMP guidelines, maintaining 6395 training compliance and ensuring precision in all material transactions and production instructions.
  • Safety & Equipment Management: Proactively safeguards operations by identifying and escalating safety hazards, alongside maintaining and calibrating automated instruments and laboratory equipment.
  • Process Improvement & Documentation: Supports the quality system by assisting with non-conformance investigations and corrective actions, meticulously tracking daily metrics, and reviewing or redlining operational documents.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lean Operations & Continuous Improvement: Drives process optimization and standard work through 6S activities, lean methodologies, and active execution of process improvement projects.
  • Collaboration & Performance Tracking: Leads and contributes to team meetings while consistently gathering data and daily metrics to monitor cycle times and support operational excellence.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Team Leadership & Development: Supervises and advises individual contributors, driving work delivery and the execution of complex projects while leading the onboarding and training of new staff.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Process Improvement: Partners proactively across functions to achieve operational targets, resolve quality investigations, facilitate new product transfers, and continuously refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management: Oversees tissue/block inventory and manages critical lab equipment lifecycles, including purchasing, coordinating calibrations, and performing IQ/OQ/PQ validations.

Who You Are (Required)

Education/Experience

  • Associates Degree (or equivalent 60 credit hours of college coursework) in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology or major in histology + HT (ASCP) Certification) + 7 years directly related histology experience OR

  • Bachelor's Degree + HTL (ASCP) Certification + 4 years directly related histology experience

  • Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification.

  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant histology experience may be considered.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical efforts in pathology and histology.
  • Knowledge of QC/QA documentation practices to meet compliance standards for CAP and clinical studies.
  • Skilled in grossing clinical biopsy samples, processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining and coverslipping of the same.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot histotechniques, lend technical support and insights for histology practices to internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to demonstrate extensive knowledge of IHC theory and troubleshooting. Must be capable of validating new instruments, new assays and routine histotechniques.
  • Demonstrated experience with Lean / Continuous Improvement
  • Experience with Google products (gMail, gSheets, gDoc, etc)
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where thorough
  • standardization exists.

The expected salary range for this position based on Arizona is 71 500,00 (34.37 hourly) - 132 900,00 (63.89 hourly) USD Annual.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
