Description

Job overview and key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Engineer - Avionics, you will serve as a technical leader responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, performance, modification, and reliability of aircraft avionics systems and related technologies. You will apply a structured and analytical approach to solving complex engineering challenges, ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of United's fleet.

In this role, you will develop engineering solutions, evaluate system performance, interpret and implement regulatory requirements, and assess the operational and financial impact of fleet decisions. You will lead projects from concept through implementation, support certification activities, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to improve aircraft reliability, safety, and operational performance.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development and implementation of complex engineering solutions, including project planning, cost-benefit analysis, technical support, and FAA approval activities as required.
  • Analyze aircraft system performance and reliability data to identify opportunities for operational improvements and corrective actions.
  • Evaluate modifications, repairs, and new technologies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and fleet performance objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership for maintenance programs, aircraft configurations, and serviceability requirements while ensuring safe and compliant operations.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and certification activities, including Supplemental Type Certificates (STC), Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA), and other regulatory processes.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory agencies to resolve technical issues and support fleet initiatives.
  • Manage multiple priorities and projects, ensuring deliverables are completed on time and in accordance with technical specifications and maintenance program requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance on emerging avionics technologies and industry best practices.
  • Support line and base maintenance operations through on-site and remote technical assistance as needed.
  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 30% based on business needs.

Qualifications

What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret complex engineering, OEM, regulatory, and technical documentation.
• Experience leading engineering projects, regulatory compliance initiatives, aircraft modifications, or system improvement programs.
• Strong project management, analytical problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent verbal communication and technical writing abilities.
• Working knowledge of airline operations, aircraft maintenance programs, or aircraft OEM operations.
• Knowledge of FAA regulations, airworthiness requirements, aircraft certification processes, and aircraft systems design and operational characteristics.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship.
• Successful completion of the interview process.
• Reliable and punctual attendance.

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
• Engineering experience supporting commercial aviation, airline fleet operations, avionics systems design, integration, or reliability programs.
• Experience supporting eEnabled aircraft systems, including Wireless Quick Access Recorders (WQAR), Aircraft Interface Devices (AIDs), onboard network systems, aircraft Wi-Fi, cellular modems/WAPS, and associated ground infrastructure and diagnostic tools.
• Knowledge of aircraft connectivity systems, network architecture, and digital aircraft technologies.
• Familiarity with aircraft cybersecurity requirements and regulatory programs, including the Aircraft Network Security Program (ANSP).
• Experience with aircraft systems integration, diagnostics, reliability analysis, fleet performance monitoring, or certification activities.
