Full Job Description
Senior Electrical Development Engineer - (Andover, MA/Hybrid)

Smith+Nephew's Arthroscopic Enabling Technologies division is working on the development of the next generation of medical devices to enable surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery. As we grow, we are seeking a Senior Electrical Development Engineer - Test Development, to play a key role in board bring-up, low-level hardware validation, and production test development.

This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer passionate about deep electrical characterization, measurement integrity, and reliability, with experience building robust, scalable test systems that support products from early prototypes through high-volume manufacturing.

What will you be doing?

Board Bring-Up & Debug
  • Lead bring-up and debug of complex PCBAs with focus on power integrity, signal integrity, timing, and analog performance
  • Perform detailed validation of low-level circuits including power rails, clocks, high-speed interfaces, ADC/DACs, and sensor interfaces
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues such as noise, jitter, distortion, crosstalk, grounding, and EMI susceptibility
  • Use lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, precision DAQs, etc.) to validate performance

Test Development
  • Develop automated, repeatable test solutions for board-level validation and characterization
  • Create test frameworks using Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools with strong emphasis on measurement accuracy and repeatability
  • Define test limits, guard bands, and acceptance criteria based on component and system requirements
  • Implement calibration routines and measurement validation techniques

Production Test & Fixtures
  • Design and develop production test fixtures (bed-of-nails, functional testers) optimized for precision and repeatability
  • Drive design-for-test (DFT) improvements to enable efficient manufacturing test coverage
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturers to deploy and sustain test systems in production
  • Improve yield, throughput, and test robustness

Reliability & Characterization
  • Perform electrical characterization across environmental conditions (temperature, voltage, aging)
  • Develop and execute reliability test methodologies including stress, margin, and drift analysis
  • Analyze test data to identify failure mechanisms and early indicators of degradation
  • Support failure analysis and contribute to corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)

Collaboration & Compliance
  • Provide DFT and design-for-reliability (DFR) input to hardware design teams
  • Work cross-functionally with firmware, systems, quality, and manufacturing engineering
  • Support design controls including documentation for DHF, test protocols, and reports
  • Ensure compliance with FDA and ISO 13485 requirements

What will you need to be successful?
  • Minimum BSc in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in hardware validation, board bring-up, or test development
  • Strong expertise in low-level electrical debugging and measurement techniques
  • Experience developing automated test systems and production test fixtures
  • Proficiency with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, analyzers, multimeters, etc.)
  • Experience in analog and mixed-signal systems
  • Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams
  • Experience with design controls in regulated industries (medical preferred)
  • Travel Requirements: Less than 10%

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $96,500 - $167,500 USD annually. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. In addition to base pay, we provide competitive bonus and benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k, tuition reimbursement, medical leave programs, parental leave, and generous PTO, paid company holidays annually and 8 hours of Volunteer time and a variety of wellness offerings such as EAP.
