Position Overview

As a Senior Commissioning & Startup Electrical Engineer, you will play a critical role in the safe, efficient, and successful startup of complex industrial and mission-critical facilities. This position is responsible for supporting electrical commissioning, testing, energization, validation, startup, turnover, and operational readiness activities across major construction projects throughout North America.

Working closely with engineering, construction, vendors, operations, and commissioning leadership, you will help develop and execute commissioning strategies, review electrical testing programs, troubleshoot complex electrical issues, and ensure systems are tested, documented, and turned over safely and effectively.

This position may support projects remotely from a Kiewit office location or directly from project sites depending on project needs and business requirements. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical engineering fundamentals with hands-on commissioning and startup experience involving critical electrical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and execution of electrical pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, testing, turnover, and operational readiness activities.
  • Develop, review, and execute commissioning procedures, startup plans, energization plans, test scripts, and turnover documentation.
  • Lead electrical testing activities including Factory Witness Testing (FWT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), Functional Performance Testing (FPT), and Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
  • Support electrical energization planning and execution, including system readiness reviews, switching plans, risk assessments, and contingency planning.
  • Perform electrical system validation and verify compliance with design intent, project requirements, and operational objectives.
  • Participate in system walkdowns, readiness reviews, punch management, and turnover activities.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical system issues encountered during commissioning and startup.
  • Support completions management activities including system boundaries, turnover workflows, commissioning readiness tracking, and systemization efforts.
  • Validate system performance during startup, failure-mode testing, and operational readiness activities.
  • Perform redundancy verification for critical electrical systems including N, N+1, and 2N architectures.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, operations, vendors, OEMs, utilities, third-party testing firms, and commissioning teams to support startup and commissioning objectives.
  • Maintain accurate commissioning records, test documentation, startup reports, and turnover packages.
  • Review electrical design documents, one-line diagrams, specifications, and vendor documentation to support commissioning and startup activities.
  • Support development and execution of system readiness reviews, commissioning schedules, and startup work plans.
  • Monitor commissioning progress and communicate system readiness status to project stakeholders.
  • Review commissioning reports and testing documentation to verify completeness and accuracy.
  • Support development of lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance future commissioning and startup execution.
  • Support coordination and resolution of commissioning punch list items and startup-related deficiencies.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all applicable project safety requirements


Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive electrical engineering, commissioning, startup, operations, maintenance, or industrial project experience.
  • Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities for industrial, power, manufacturing, mission-critical, or data center facilities.
  • Experience with medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with electrical testing, startup, and energization activities.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, testing, and operational readiness activities, including exposure to Functional Performance Testing (FPT) and Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
  • Strong understanding of electrical system redundancy concepts including N, N+1, and 2N architectures.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and relocate to project sites throughout North America based on business needs.


Preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale data center, mission-critical, industrial, power generation, or EPC projects.
  • Experience with protective relaying systems and electrical acceptance testing.
  • Experience supporting completions, turnover, systemization, or CSU programs.
  • Experience with commissioning management software and turnover management systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting one-lines, relay protection drawings, control narratives, cause-and-effect matrices, equipment documentation, and construction documents.
  • Experience working within a contractor-led commissioning and execution environment.
