What We're Looking For

Baylor University seeks an experienced Senior Network Engineer to join its centralized IT Network Services Group. This role is responsible for designing, engineering, and maintaining secure, reliable, and high-performance network services across all major campus environments-including faculty/staff, residential, Wi-Fi, OT/IoT, research, and datacenter networks spanning physical, virtual, and cloud components.

Candidates must demonstrate deep knowledge of complex enterprise network operations, strong analytical and architectural skills, and excellent communication abilities. This position requires managing multiple concurrent projects with tight timelines, independently evaluating emerging technologies, and architecting new solutions to advance the university's network infrastructure. The Senior Network Engineer will also mentor Network Administrators by providing technical guidance and modeling best practices.

A Bachelors degree and 6 years of experience are required. A Master's degree and 10 years of experience is preferred. This position does require to be On-Site at Baylor University located in Waco, Texas.

Additional Requirements:

Technical Skills
  • Enterprise Wi-Fi access points and controller solutions
  • Enterprise Ethernet switching solutions
  • Wi-Fi site survey and wireless diagnostics tools
  • Deep understanding of switching and routing operations, including OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6
  • Installation and troubleshooting of CAT6A cabling
  • Fiber-optic termination and troubleshooting
  • Troubleshooting of coax/CATV cabling
  • Experience with firewalls, VPN appliances, load balancers, and cloud networking architectures
  • Experience implementing network security and compliance best practices
  • Strong proficiency with Python scripting and network automation frameworks

Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a Full-Time basis.

What You Will Do
  1. Advanced Operational Support & Escalation
    • Serve as an escalation point for Tier-1 issues, providing expert-level network troubleshooting
    • Resolve Tier-2 requests including firewall rule updates, VPN account provisioning, and other intermediate-complexity network changes
  2. Campuswide Network and Services Support
    • Support reliable operation of diverse campus networks and associated systems
    • Lead network projects and contribute to planning and execution of major infrastructure initiatives
    • Maintain and troubleshoot enterprise network services such as:
      • Network Access Control (NAC) systems
      • Network management platforms
      • DDI services (DNS, DHCP, IPAM)
      • RADIUS authentication systems
      • Windows and Linux servers supporting network operations
  3. Monitoring, Diagnostics & Vendor Management
    • Perform proactive network monitoring, diagnostics, and performance optimization
    • Coordinate with hardware and software vendors on quotes, RMAs, escalated support cases, and technical guidance
  4. Documentation & Automation
    • Develop and maintain engineering-level documentation, design diagrams, operational reports, and infrastructure standards
    • Create and maintain Python scripts and network automation tools to streamline deployments and improve operational efficiency
  5. Architecture & Technology Evaluation
    • Independently evaluate new technologies, tools, and methodologies to modernize and optimize campus network services
    • Lead architectural design for new facilities, major network upgrades, and long-term infrastructure initiatives
