Full Job Description
The Senior Director of New England Field Engineering and Construction provides strategic leadership, executive oversight, and operational direction for the end-to-end deployment of our physical telecommunications infrastructure. This high-impact role is responsible for leading multi-regional teams of engineers, project managers, and field construction crews to design, build, and maintain our extensive aerial, underground, and buried fiber/copper network infrastructure. As a member of the senior leadership team, you will drive operational excellence, manage multi-million dollar capital expenditure (CapEx) budgets, foster strategic vendor relationships, and ensure all builds meet strict safety, quality, regulatory, and timeline targets. What you'll be doing: • Outside Plant (OSP) Infrastructure Design: Oversee advanced engineering teams tasked with designing complex structures, optical distribution networks, FTTCS, and providing route analysis for underground and aerial fiber optic installations. • Infrastructure Build-outs: Lead the construction, updating, and maintenance of plant infrastructure to execute network build-out targets within tight timelines and project management standards. • Carrier & Wireless Integration: Partner with wireless teams (VZW) and external carriers to deliver network transport for small cell, macro, and in-building wireless solutions. • Strategic Leadership & People Engagement: Define and execute the long-term strategic vision for regional OSP infrastructure deployments while building an environment that motivates, engages, and retains field engineering and operations talent. Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and career growth pathways to inspire high team productivity, operational excellence, and strong union partnerships. • Fiscal Accountability: Build, forecast, and manage multi-million dollar annual budgets. Drive cost-efficiency, review end-to-end materials oversight, and optimize total cost. • Regulatory & Permitting Compliance: Maintain executive accountability for securing necessary municipal right-of-ways (ROW), DOT permits, joint-use pole attachments, and environmental clearances. • Safety & Quality Assurance: Cultivate a safety culture across all field environments. Implement strict quality control frameworks to minimize downstream plant defects. • AI & Technological Innovation: Champion the adoption of cutting-edge technological solutions, actively leveraging AI-driven workflows and automation to eliminate redundancies and enhance workforce efficiencies. What we're looking for: This position requires extensive technical knowledge of the Verizon infrastructure and Fiber Engineering & Operations footprint systems. In addition, the candidate should have a comprehensive understanding of how the FE&O field organization operates and how all organizations coordinate to turn up HBW/LBW circuits. As this position will interact with a variety of Verizon personnel at all levels of the organization, as well as interface with many different customers, union officials, leadership and stakeholders, excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. • 8+ years of progressive experience in telecommunications operations, with comprehensive technical knowledge of large-footprint carrier networks and systems. • Bachelor's Degree in related field, or equivalent experience (advanced degree desired) • Fiber Network & Outside Plant (OSP) Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience and deep technical knowledge in outside plant telecom environments, including underground/aerial fiber design, optical distribution networks, and large-scale fiber deployment. Wireless experience is a plus. • People Leadership & Union Management: 7+ years of relevant supervisory experience managing multi-tiered leadership teams and a proven track record of leading large field and engineering teams in heavily unionized environments. • Direct Union Leadership Experience: Demonstrated success in handling complex labor relations, navigating union grievance processes, working directly with union officials, and interpreting collective bargaining policies. • Financial Acumen: Advanced principles and practices in cost estimating, budget preparation, and schedule performance for massive CapEx/OpEx projects. • Strategic & Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical and critical problem-solving skills; ability to organize complex data, build strategic recommendations, and manage multiple competing priorities. • Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; proven track record of effectively partnering with internal departments, cross-functional peers, union representatives, and high-level external stakeholders. The candidate must work within the territory. This position is office-based and flexible to sit within any of the garage work centers in the Boston Metro area. Where you'll be working In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes working from home and a minimum of three days per week in the office, which will be set by your manager. Employees are responsible for maintaining compliance with hybrid work policies.
