The ROCKS Team in Raytheon Digital Technology has an opening for a Senior Automation Engineer with strong Ansible and Windows development experience. ROCKS is a Platform Engineering team that provides an integrated container management platform built on Kubernetes and a set of managed services in our location. ROCKS provides a modern cloud native container orchestration platform that can be installed on air-gapped classified information systems or installed on program unique unclassified deployments. ROCKS is the Raytheon standard Kubernetes based container management platform which provides automated container deployment, scaling and management that enables development teams to leverage a cloud native infrastructure stack for increased velocity and to focus on their code and applications, while not needing to worry about "infrastructure" ROCKS provides a complete bundled package for a closed area infrastructure team to take from low to high into their Information System to deploy, configure, and operate a Kubernetes based container management platform and provide development teams a portable solution across infrastructures and enable increased velocity using a cloud native stack.

What You Will Do
  • Infrastructure Automation & Deployment
  • Work with requirements to design and implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Ansible for provisioning across multiple platforms:
  • VMware vCenter: Automated VM provisioning, template management, network configuration, and storage allocation
  • Bare Metal: PXE boot automation, hardware configuration, BIOS/firmware management, and OS deployment
  • Cloud Environments: AWS, Azure, and/or GCP resource provisioning, configuration management, and orchestration
  • Design reusable, modular Ansible roles and collections that support consistent deployment patterns across target environments
  • Development & Integration
  • Write custom Ansible modules, plugins, and filters using Python to extend platform capabilities
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for testing, validating, and deploying automation code
  • Integrate automation solutions with source control (Git), secrets management, and monitoring platforms
  • Develop RESTful API integrations to connect automation workflows with enterprise systems
  • Operations & Continuous Improvement
  • Create comprehensive documentation including runbooks, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures
  • Monitor automation execution, troubleshoot failures, and implement improvements for reliability and performance
  • Participate in on-call rotation for critical automation infrastructure support
  • Track and report on automation metrics including deployment frequency, success rates, and time savings


Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years' experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Ansible Expertise -experience with Ansible execution environments and containerized automation
  • Programming & Scripting Experience
  • Active Directory and Group Policy automation
  • Linux system administration (RHEL/CentOS preferred)
  • Windows Server administration (2019/2022)


Qualifications We Prefer:
  • Network and storage configuration
  • VMware vSphere/vCenter administration and automation experience including: VM lifecycle management and template creation
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting capabilities (2+ years) including:
  • Desired State Configuration (DSC)
  • Python development skills (3+ years) including: REST API development and consumption
  • Bare metal provisioning experience including PXE, Kickstart/Preseed, and hardware management
  • Understanding of operating system security principles, hardening techniques, and compliance frameworks
  • Experience with system internals, performance tuning, and troubleshooting
  • Working with configuration files (YAML, JSON, INI)
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience with Ansible
  • Deep understanding of Ansible architecture including playbooks, roles, collections, inventories, and vault
  • Experience developing custom Ansible modules, plugins, callbacks, and filters
  • Proficiency with Ansible Galaxy and creating/publishing reusable collections
  • Strong knowledge of Jinja2 templating and YAML best practices

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
