Job Summary

Battelle is seeking a subject matter expert (SME) in chronic disease prevention to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP). The SME will provide strategic and technical expertise across NCCDPHP's chronic disease prevention portfolio by delivering expert consultation, supporting literature reviews and manuscript development, assessing current and future program needs, facilitating change management initiatives, and guiding implementation of evidence-based public health strategies. The successful candidate will coordinate multidisciplinary activities, develop integrated program and service approaches, build effective cross-functional support structures, and provide leadership across multiple client engagements to ensure the delivery of high-quality, timely products and services that advance CDC's chronic disease prevention and health promotion mission.

This role requires recognized expertise in chronic disease prevention and health promotion, with demonstrated experience working with CDC or other federal public health organizations. The position is remote with proximity to Atlanta, GA preferred, and travel to Washington, DC and Columbus, OH required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical authority and trusted advisor to CDC and other public health stakeholders.
  • Provide expert consultation and analysis on chronic disease epidemiology, surveillance, prevention, intervention design, implementation, and program strategy.
  • Lead or contribute to literature reviews, environmental scans, evidence syntheses, technical reports, manuscripts, presentations, and scientific products.
  • Assess current-state program operations, stakeholder roles, workflows, evidence use, and performance; develops future-state recommendations, strategic roadmaps, and implementation plans.
  • Plan and facilitate change management activities including stakeholder engagement, readiness assessments, communications, implementation support, adoption monitoring, and organizational transition planning.
  • Apply quality controls to deliverables, including methodological review, source verification, citation review, version control, and senior scientific review to ensure timely and high-quality outputs.
  • Guide implementation of chronic disease prevention and health promotion strategies and management of technical support services supporting the NCCDPHP chronic disease prevention portfolio.
  • Develop integrated product and service strategies; provide scientific analysis, interpretation of evidence, and strategic recommendations to support portfolio goals and decision-making.
  • Create workplans, governance structures, decision frameworks, review processes, and implementation approaches for project components while ensuring alignment with broader program objectives.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and multifaceted program activities; develop integrated scientific, technical, and operational strategies that connect stakeholder needs, resources, and performance goals.
  • Build and sustain cross-functional teams, collaborate across disciplines, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and establish processes that support efficient delivery of technical assistance and subject matter expertise.
  • Provide leadership across multiple client engagements, establish overarching technical vision, manage interdependencies and risks, and ensure alignment across concurrent chronic disease prevention initiatives.

Key Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in public health, epidemiology, chronic disease prevention, health promotion, behavioral or social science, implementation science, health policy, medicine, nursing, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public health research, chronic health prevention, surveillance, implementation, or a closely related area.
  • Documented experience working at or with CDC, another federal health agency, or a comparable public health organization.
  • Relevant licensing, certification, credential, publication history, or other evidence of recognized subject matter expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in public health, epidemiology, chronic health prevention, behavioral or social science, implementation science, health policy, medicine, nursing, or a related field.
  • Experience directly supporting CDC, NCCDPHP, or federally funded chronic disease prevention programs, cooperative agreements, or technical assistance initiatives.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or scientific presentations.
  • Experience developing strategic plans, organizational assessments, and change management initiatives.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex public health programs or initiatives.
