Position: Senior Backend Engineer
Location: Vancouver, BC - Hybrid
Annual Salary Range: $140,000 CAD - $150,000 CAD
You'll work on a mature Ruby on Rails platform, design scalable technical solutions, improve legacy systems, and influence engineering standards across the organization. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys tackling complex architecture, mentoring others, and driving technical excellence.
We are looking for an engineer who is comfortable balancing delivery with thoughtful technical decision-making. You should enjoy working in complex systems, asking difficult questions, and improving the quality of both the codebase and the engineering process.
Success in this role requires strong ownership, sound judgment, and the ability to influence work beyond your own immediate assignments.
What You'll Do- Design and build scalable backend solutions using Ruby on Rails.
- Own technical architecture, API design, data models, and legacy modernization initiatives.
- Lead technical design discussions and document solutions for complex engineering challenges.
- Review code, mentor engineers, and raise the bar for engineering quality.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering teams in an Agile environment.
- Diagnose production issues using AWS and Datadog.
- Drive technical improvements beyond assigned work and proactively identify opportunities to improve the platform.
Required Skills- Expert-level Ruby on Rails development experience.
- Strong system design and software architecture experience.
- Experience designing APIs, database schemas, and complex backend systems.
- Proven ability to work autonomously and drive initiatives from idea through implementation.
- Strong code review, mentoring, and cross-team technical collaboration skills.
- Comfortable working in Scrum/Agile environments.
- Experience working with AWS and Datadog (or similar observability tools).
- AI fluency: Expert user of generative AI development tools with experience leveraging AI-including multi-agent orchestration-to accelerate software development.
- AI leadership: Proven ability to mentor engineers on AI-assisted development, establish team best practices, and drive adoption of effective AI engineering workflows.
Nice to Have- Experience with ReactJS.
- Experience modernizing legacy applications.
- B2B SaaS or PropTech experience.
- Experience building highly scalable cloud applications.
