Full Job Description
Job Description:

WSJ Newsroom | Senior Data Analyst (September 2026)

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to join our newsroom data team, reporting to the Senior Manager, Newsroom Analytics. You will work directly with editorial, audience, and product teams on the decisions that shape how our journalism is reported, prioritized, and delivered to readers.

This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role that blends strong analytical craft with sharp newsroom judgment. You will own the analyses, dashboards, and measurement frameworks the newsroom depends on, and see your work through from question to adopted decision. You will also help set the technical bar for the data team, mentoring more junior colleagues and strengthening our shared practices.

This position will be based in our New York office.

You will:

  • Serve as a trusted analytics partner to newsroom editorial and strategy leaders, driving audience growth, engagement and retention. Frame the right questions, answer them with rigorous analysis, and translate findings for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Develop and maintain centralized dashboards and automated reports that expand self-serve access to newsroom data.

  • Run deep-dive analyses on areas of opportunity, major news events, high-priority moments, and unexplained shifts in performance.

  • Push measurement forward by developing novel metrics and analytical frameworks that inform newsroom strategy, and drive adoption across editorial, product, and business teams.

  • Own and maintain the reporting stack, partnering with data engineering and product to keep our data accurate, fresh, and high-quality, and to strengthen the taxonomies, instrumentation, and foundational datasets the newsroom relies on. Respond to and prevent pipeline incidents so daily reporting stays reliable.

  • Design and run A/B tests and experiments in partnership with strategy, product, and tech teams, applying statistical measurement to interpret results and translate them into decisions about editorial and audience strategy.

  • Mentor junior analysts, set shared standards for technical and non-technical outputs, and contribute to a shared library of methods and lessons the team can pull from.

You have:

  • 3+ years in data analytics, data science, or a related field, preferably in media, publishing, or content.

  • Track record of owning recurring reporting end-to-end and delivering analyses whose findings have shaped business decisions.

  • Strong SQL skills, with experience working in large-scale data warehouses like BigQuery or Snowflake, and analytics-engineering frameworks like dbt.

  • Experience designing and running A/B tests, and applying statistical methods to interpret results

  • Proficiency in Python for analysis, data wrangling, and automating analytical workflows, with experience maintaining code in Git.

  • Strong communication skills, with a track record of driving alignment and consensus across cross-functional groups.

Standout candidates will have strengths in one or more of the following:

  • A background in content performance analysis, audience segmentation, cohort analysis, or editorial research.

  • Working knowledge of off-platform attribution, connecting distributed content and platform referrals to downstream engagement.

  • Comfort using AI/LLM tooling to speed up analytical workflows or make data more accessible to non-technical partners.

  • Prior newsroom experience with an interest in driving journalistic outcomes.
