Job Description:

As a Sales & Use Tax Manager, you will lead the preparation, review, and delivery of indirect tax compliance and consulting services for multi-state clients. You will work closely with Senior Managers, Directors, and client leadership to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant deliverables while managing client relationships, mentoring team members, and driving process improvements. This role emphasizes technical leadership, project management, and team development, with opportunities to contribute to practice growth and strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and review sales and use tax returns for multi-state clients, including monthly, quarterly, and annual filings
  • Oversee transactional data analysis to ensure proper taxability, sourcing, and rate application
  • Review reconciliations of sales and purchase data to general ledger and other source systems
  • Lead exemption certificate review, validation, and management processes
  • Research and interpret complex state and local sales/use tax rules, including nexus, taxability, exemptions, and emerging legislation
  • Identify client exposure areas, process inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement; communicate recommendations to leadership and clients
  • Manage sales/use tax audits, including coordinating data requests, preparing responses, and interacting with taxing authorities
  • Review workpapers and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with firm standards and regulatory requirements
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing guidance on indirect tax matters and maintaining strong client relationships
  • Coordinate and manage engagement timelines, deliverables, and staff assignments across multiple projects
  • Mentor, train, and review the work of Senior Associates and Associates, providing ongoing feedback and development support
  • Utilize tax compliance software and data tools (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, OneSource, or similar) to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Assist with process improvement initiatives, technology implementation, and practice development efforts


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field preferred
  • CPA, CMI, JD, or LLM required
  • 5 years of public accounting experience, with a strong focus on Sales & Use Tax compliance
  • Strong hands-on experience using ONESOURCE Indirect Tax or equivalent sales tax compliance software
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and engagements
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience working with large data sets
  • Proven ability to lead teams, review staff work, and mentor junior professionals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with clients and internal leadership
  • Detail-oriented, analytical, and solutions-focused mindset

At Crowe, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $87,100.00 - $178,100.00 per year.This role follows a hybrid work model for candidates located near a Crowe office. Candidates who are not within commuting distance of a Crowe office may be considered for a remote work arrangement, subject to business needs.
