Position Summary

The Sales Manager promotes and books events for the facility through an aggressive sales & marketing effort. The Sales Manager will work with the customer on initial rates and terms of the contract and convey that information to other necessary facility staff to further work effectively with the customer.

This role pays an annual salary of $78,500-$85,000.

The Santa Clara Convention Center is proudly owned by the City of Santa Clara. We are strategically located in the heart of Silicon Valley, a prime location for conventions, trade shows, and exhibitions. The Santa Clara Convention Center is minutes from hotels, restaurants, Levi's Stadium, California's Great America Theme Park, and many of the largest and most influential technology companies in the world, with easy access to freeways and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport and only 45 miles south of San Francisco. The Convention Center features 100,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 22,400 square foot ballroom, 31 breakout rooms, and a 607-seat theater and attracts over 350,000 visitors annually. The facility is an integral economic component of Santa Clara, generating economic benefits through attendees' direct and indirect spending and sustaining over 500 local jobs.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the facility as its primary sales representative both locally and out of town
  • Attends Trade Shows and industry functions as a representative of the destination
  • Researches, identifies, and establishes the needs of groups for the facility
  • Contacts prospective user groups and individuals to initiate the sales effort. Discusses the facility with site selection committees or appropriate others.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the sales/marketing activities of the facility, including developing budget submissions and follow-through systems and procedures.
  • Meets specified assigned sales goals and objectives
  • Initiates written and oral communications internally and externally
  • Promptly responds to all customer calls and requests within a 24-hour period
  • Maintains relationships with CVB and other hospitality establishments and promotes effective relations with representatives of local and user groups.
  • Participate in local and community organization networking opportunities monthly
  • Communicates problems and proposed solutions to the Senior Director of Sales
  • Submits sales reports and performs related duties as required
  • Will perform outside sales calls and solicitation calls as required
  • Work cohesively with other departments
  • Attend internal meetings and represents the facility as deemed necessary
  • Adheres to sales guidelines and procedures when booking business
  • Prepares and executes Proposals, Space requests, and License Agreement requirements
  • Meets and/or exceeds required assigned revenue goals
  • Supports the overall tasks related to sales for the facility, such as providing administrative assistance in the maintenance and data entry of the CRM and internal management systems.
  • Adheres to sales guidelines and procedures when booking business
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities of all Sales programs and activities
  • Support all services and activities of the Sales Department within the facility, including sales tools and materials, proposals, sales calls and contracts
  • Prepare written proposals; reevaluate potential business value of various events and clients; initiate contractual arrangements.
  • Conduct tours of facility for potential licensees; answer questions and provide information regarding facility capabilities
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Principles and practices of sales and marketing
  • Learn and understand the operation of the convention center and apply that knowledge to continually improve
  • Work as needed on a flexible schedule, including early mornings, days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays, extended workdays, and extended numbers of days.
  • Perform basic arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) either manually or by operating a calculator
  • All other duties as assigned by Senior Director of Sales.


Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of increasingly responsible experience in an administrative support position, preferably in a sales capacity at a hotel, convention center or related meeting
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in marketing, public relations, business administration, hospitality management or other related
  • Additional years of experience may be substituted for formal education
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as event specifications and/or previous event schedules obtained from a diverse assortment of clients.
  • Ability to effectively present information and suggestions to clients to better meet their needs and/or to avoid damage or liability for the Center.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with management, department heads, and the hotel verbally or in writing and with drawings.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and common sense in dealing with such situations.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Ability to interact with clients, other facility staff, and contractors in a courteous, cooperative, team-oriented, and professional manner.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work long hours and unusual schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays according to customer needs.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and computer profiency.
  • Experience with business letter writing and basic report preparation.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of recordkeeping and financial reporting.
  • Strong customer service skills are required.
