Job DescriptionThe State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University (Downstate) and Department of Neurology invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Research Professor (HS) to lead a laboratory research program focused on the molecular mechanisms of neuroprotection and neuronal cell death and their therapeutic implications for stroke.
The successful candidate will bring a robust funded grant portfolio from the NIH. Funding from additional agencies or foundations is encouraged. The successful candidate should be a recognized international leader in their field with a record of exemplary scholarship and research contributions to the field.
The faculty member will contribute to teaching and training of medical students in the College of Medicine and MD/PhD and PhD graduate students in the School of Graduate Studies' Neural & Behavioral Science program.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Pursue research and scholarly work in your field of study
- Seek out external funding to support your research program
- Be involved in university service including committee service, interviewing applicants for our medical and graduate schools, etc.
- Support the educational and research mission of the College of Medicine
- Serve as an Advisor for Medical Student Research within the Department of Medical Education
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of research-related activities involving medical students
- Help ensure that students have access to high-quality research opportunities, mentorship, and resources that support their scholarly development and align with the institution's mission of advancing medical education and scientific discovery
- Assist with grade appeals within the Department of Medical Education, providing guidance and support throughout the review process
- Participate in the teaching of medical school and graduate school students, which may entail leading small groups, lecturing, and/or serving as a research mentor
- Play an active role in the wider academic community through participation in activities such as departmental and university committee service, interviewing applicants, etc.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- MD or PhD Degree
- 5-years of research experience, clinical expertise and experience in neurorehabilitation
- Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
